The first trailer for The Hunger Games hit the web shortly after its premiere on Good Morning America, and it looks like the odds will be in the favor of anyone who goes to see what will probably be an awesome movie, with the first look already tugging on a few heart strings.
If you’ve read the Suzanne Collins novel of the same name, then the trailer probably didn’t offer any surprises in terms of the plot, but Hunger Games newbies might have been shocked to learn that Katniss Everdeen was not the person originally chosen to take part in the lethal form of entertainment. That honor (?) originally went to little sis Primrose, who is guaranteed at least another year of survival when Katniss steps up and volunteers to take her place. Be honest. Your throat tightened up just a little bit during that scene.
While the storyline didn’t offer any shocks for Hunger Games veterans, the visuals had to wow even hardcore fans of the series, with the trailer holding nothing back. We’ve been flooded with pics of Katniss, Peeta, and Gale, and the recent character posters provided a good peek at a few of the major players, but I thought it was still exciting to see Woody Harrelson’s Haymitch, Lenny Kravitz’s Cinna, and Elizabeth Banks’ Effie Trinket in action. We even get treated to Stanley Tucci rocking the blue hair of Caesar Flickerman, and that’s worth the price of admission right there.
There’s not a whole lot of action involved since the Tributes don’t start the game until the end of the video, but there’s plenty of drama tucked inside this little clip and I’m looking forward to The Hunger Games hitting the big screen.
Move over, Twilight. There’s a new franchise in town.
