It is common knowledge that in the casting process, many different people are looked at for roles or even offered. We recently published an article about casting close calls but did you know that there were over 30 actresses who auditioned for the role of Katniss in the film adaptation of The Hunger Games.The Hunger Games is the highly anticipated blockbuster set to premiere on March 23. The film is based on the novel series written by Suzanne Collins. The movie is starring Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role but she almost didnt get the part.
Celebuzz recently released the list of the Katnisses that almost were.
The lovely Emma Roberts, most has starred in films like Scream 4 and It’s Kind Of a Funny Story, told MTV that she was in the runnings for the role of Katniss. She said:
“I was definitely interested in it, but it was just one of those things that didn’t end up happening, But I’m really excited to see the movie. I read all the books a couple weeks ago and I’ve got all my friends hooked, so it’s totally cool and I can’t wait to see it.”
The darling Abigail Bresin, you might know her from her starring role in Little Miss Sunshine as well as her new film, New Years Eve, also had auditioned according to Entertainment Weekly.
Emily Brown, most known for her role in Sucker Punch, has also auditioned for Katniss but it was also reported that she auditioned for the role of Bella in Twilight as well. She said:
“I read for [‘Hunger Games’] a couple of times, but I’ve never read the book, to be honest — which I know is terrible of me. I was nervous about it.”
Kick Ass star,Chloe Moretz met with studios executives to talk about auditions for Katniss.
Kaya Scodelario was originally the fan favorite for the role of Katniss. Her rep did later confirm that she had auditioned for the part. She had said this about the project on her twitter page:
“Ok so i have had a lot of people asking if i have been sent a certain script for a film based on a book. yes i have. i like it. BUT there’s probably a million other people auditioning for the part and its not up to me. but lets see what happens. thanks to the fans of THG who suggested me.”
True Grit star, Hailee Steinfeld, met with director Gary Ross regarding the role. She told MTV:
“It’s definitely something that we’re taking one day at a time and making sure that everything is in place.”
Lyndsy Fonseca, who has appeared in “How I Met Your Mother” and recently the horror movie, The Ward had also expressed interest in the role. She told Movieline that she had even done a script reading for the part.
“I went to [director] Gary [Ross’s] house and read with him. He’s just a lovely man. You know, there were just a few of us girls by that point and Gary has a studio in his house, we worked on it for a little bit. But I was just lucky to get that far, to be honest.”
Many fans expressed interest in Atonement‘s Saoirse Ronan. She later revealed that she had been up for the part. She told EOnline!:
“I read the script. I think the story is very interesting, and I read the book and I really liked it.”
Shailene Woodley, most known for her role in the hit television show, “The Secret Life of an American Teenager,” also had the chance to audition for the tolr of Katniss. While she didnt get the role, she went on to star in The Descendants, which is currently an Oscar favorite.
Malese Jow initally prompted speculation when she tweeted a message regarding the film. However, she didnt get the part.
We know the role of Katniss Everdeen eventually went to Jennifer Lawrence. After seeing the promotions and trailers for the film, I think Jennifer is going to do a great job.
