Holmes and Watson are back on the case and not even the fact that Watson is on his honeymoon will protect him from the madness that is Holmes’ genius as they lock horns with Professor Moriarty in these two new TV promos for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
Robert Downey Jr was probably the last person I pictured as Sherlock Holmes but Guy Ritchie’s version of the detective fits RDJ like a glove. However, it’s Jude Law’s straight-faced portrayal of Watson that really made the first film work for me. In these new clips from SuperHeroHype, we see the duo up to their old tricks as they square off against Professor Moriarty, in addition to getting a peek at Noomi Rapace’s Simzi.
Ritchie used slow-mo to emphasize the action in Sherlock Holmes and he sticks with what works in A Game of Shadows. While I think the effect can be a bit tedious when overdone, it works exceptionally well with the run through the woods as cannons and guns fire all around our fleeing heroes.
I also like the fact that we get to see a little more interaction between Holmes and Moriarty in the first clip because it’s the mental duel between these two that will really make this film shine above the first movie.
While we’ll have to wait and see if the plot is able to hold up, A Game of Shadows will have no problem with delivering on the action, and a cross-dressing Holmes combined with a Watson that’s angry about the direction his honeymoon is going shows that humor is still a priority. If anything can make the adventures of a Victorian-era detective entertaining, it’s the chemistry between Downey Jr and Law because the two seem to be having a genuinely good time working together… unlike Holmes and Watson.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows arrives in theaters on December 16th.
