Did you know that vampyres have to go to school to learn the ropes of their new life? It’s true, at least when you’re talking about the popular House of Night YA series written by the mother-daughter team of P.C. and Kristin Cast, and the school of vamps is getting ready to head to the big screen.

If you took the angst-filled vampires from the Twilight saga and put them in a freaky school that’s reminiscent of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts, you might come close to the world that exists in the House of Night series. Toss in some elaborate tattoos, vampyre gods and goddesses, and a little back-stabbing, and you end up with a book series that’s just screaming to be transformed into a movie.

The House of Night series (known to fans simply as HoN) currently consists of nine novels and one novella. The tenth book in the main series, Hidden, is currently being worked on, and the second novella, Lenobia’s Vow, hits bookstores on January 31, 2012.

Think about that. Ten novels and still going strong. And you thought Harry Potter and his seven novels were a force to be reckoned with. If the HoN series does well at the movies, your kids could finish watching the series that you started.

According to Collider, the YA series was picked up by Samuel Hadida of Davis Films, which happens to be the same company behind the Silent Hill and Resident Evil franchises. I can’t say much on the Silent Hill title but Resident Evil shows they know a thing or two about working a series for the long haul.

The first novel, Marked, introduces readers to sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird, a normal teen that gets shipped off to the House of Night boarding school when her vampyre markings appear. Once there, she learns that instead of just being a normal fledgling, she’s been chosen by a vampyre Goddess as someone special. Of course, it wouldn’t be a YA paranormal story without a little teen romance going on, so that’s tossed into the mix too.

Will the House of Night series be the next Harry Potter or Twilight? With elements of both, I suppose it has a pretty good chance but we’ll have to wait and see what happens as the film gets closer to becoming reality.
