The two greatest detectives in fiction might be teaming up, with the possibility of movie-goers getting to check out the second trailer for The Dark Knight Rises when they go see Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (the 70mm IMAX version) will offer an extra goody to the crowds with a six-minute preview for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, and now Batman on Film is reporting that the second trailer for the caped crusader’s newest adventure will be attached to Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. There’s been no official word at this time so take the info with a grain of salt but it’s a combination that makes sense when you consider the commercial possibilities.
Both TDKR and A Game of Shadows are Warner Bros flicks and you’d think the audience for one would be in the same demographic as the other. Also, with the preview for TDKR that’s attached to Ghost Protocol being reserved only for those who shell out the extra money for the 70mm IMAX screening, a trailer with A Game of Shadows doesn’t let anyone feel left out. Of course, the studio (and theaters) are probably hoping people want the best of both worlds and go see both films to see all the available previews.
Aside from the commercial interests that could be attached to the move, linking up Batman and Sherlock Holmes is great from a story-telling point of view. After all, Batman will be facing Bane, who is possibly the greatest threat the masked vigilante has ever encountered, and Holmes will be coming face-to-face to with Professor Moriarty, his #1 arch-nemesis. It’s perfect geek synchronicity.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows will be arriving in theaters on December 16th, with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol showing up on the big screen on December 21st. There’s still a little bit of a wait for The Dark Knight Rises, which will be swooping into theaters on July 20, 2012.
