The popular children’s fairy tale is getting an unique twist that is sure to make you rethink those typical “happy endings” in similar stories. Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we get some first looks at the new adaptation.
The film, entitled Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, will star Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton. It will also include Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare and Derek Mears.
Instead of focusing on the actual tale of the duo, the movie takes place 15 years after the siblings’ murder of the witch at the gingerbread house.
Arterton explains:
“You see a series of flashbacks with their experience of killing that first witch, which is brilliant… The heart of it is that these kids grow up to be bloodthirsty witch hunters.”
She also stated that while the film is a bit tongue in cheek:
“it’s also very, very dark, and bloodthirsty and there’s a lot of cursing. It’s kind of got a [Quentin] Tarantino feel, really.”
She went on to describe the characters in this film and their differences:
“Gretel is much more in tune with her spiritual side. Hansel is a typical action hero, cheeky, funny, a womanizer. She’s much more of a thinker, intense, internal and bit more open-minded than he is.”
The film will be released in 2-D and 3-D and is expected to be released on March 2nd.
The film has been described as an action horror comedy film. It will be interesting to see how all the elements land together.
