The recent book to movie adaptation, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, was one of the most talked about movies over the holiday season. It is no surprise that Sony plans to make the sequel into a film as well.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is the first book in the Millennium trilogy that also features The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest.

The movie stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig and follows Journalist Mikael Blomkvist as he is aided by Lisbeth Salander, a young computer hacker, in his search for a woman who has been missing for forty years.

Although the book series and movies are a global phenomenon, (seriously everyone I know asked me if I was going to see it on Christmas) many feel like the film is underperforming. Released by Sony, the film cost about $90 million to make which doesn’t include the marketing costs and as of now it has only earned $60 million at the domestic box office. Hopefully, when the movie hits international box offices this month it will gain more attention and revenue.

Despite this, Sony is going to continue on with the sequel, The Girl Who Played With Fire.

“[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book,” a Sony rep told Entertainment Weekly.

They also said that “development continues” on the sequel and that Steven Zaillian is also returning to work on the script.

No word yet on whether David Fincher is going to return as director but Mara and Craig have already agreed to appear in the next two films.
