Paul Giamatti Signs On To Romeo and Juliet

When you think of a reboot for Romeo And Juliet, there are probably a couple of actors who come to mind that could possibly star in the film. Was Paul Giamatti one of them? He didn’t for me either, but Variety recently reported that he has joined the cast for the remake of the Bard’s classic tale.

The reboot for the story of star-crossed lovers comes from Carlo Carlei and will begin shooting in Italy later this month.

It was announced that Giamatti will play Friar Lawrence, a character who aids in the turning point of the story from a tale of lovers to a tale of death. Hailee Steinfeld, who played in the remake of True Grit, is set to play Juliet with Douglas Booth playing her opposite, Romeo. Also announced was the casting of Ed Westwick and Kodi Smit-McPhee to play their cousins, Tybalt and Benvolio.

The film is being produced by Amber Entertainment and Italy’s Indiana Production. Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, “Downton Abbey”) wrote the screenplay and will produce with Ileen Maisel and Lawrence Elman. The shooting will take place in Mantua, which if you remember, is the city that Romeo was banished to in the play.

It has been said that his remake is going to be the Romeo and Juliet for the generation that loves Twilight. I don’t know how this is going work out though, because we had a Romeo and Juliet like that and it had Leonardo DiCaprio in it. (Personally, I loved what they did with that remake, so nothing can top it except the original).
