Yes, Romeo and Juliet is remakes that seems to occur at least once every decade. With one of the most recent incarnations having it set in present day, it is no surprise its next frontier is that of the future. A sci-fi Romeo and Juliet, called Upside Down has just released its trailer.
The project was first announced back in late 2009. Now, roughly two years later, the film as released its French trailer. The trailer was released through CANAL+ (via HeyUGuys.co.uk).
Upside Down stars Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst, both pretty talented actors. The plot features two lovers who are attempting to unite but are up against two different worlds which hover above/below one another which is the cause of reverse gravitational pulls.
I love astronomy and science, and I love Romeo and Juliet but to me, at first, this concept seems a little contrived. I am all for a sic-fi version but it has to be done right. In fact when I read the description I thought of one thing: that scene in Thank You For Smoking when Rob Lowe’s character describes their new space movie, Sector 6. Seriously.
However, after seeing the trailer, it looks pretty damn good. This movie looks really gorgeous and pretty innovative. I liked the overall feel of the movie. And it of course seems really sweet, but any Romeo and Juliet film is sweet because its about love. I will definitely give it a shot.
I hope good direction and good acting will make this a good movie.
It will be directed by Juan Solanas, Upside Down is expected to see release sometime in 2012.
