It seems that the Joe Wright directed origin tale for “Peter Pan” is moving forward as according to Deadline, casting is now underway. Warner Bros. appears to being eyeing Javier Bardem (not to be confused with Jeffrey Dean Morgan) for the lead villain role in the film adaptation also known as the pirate Blackbeard.
Bardem is no stranger to villain roles as he is most known for portraying Anton Chigur in No County For Old Men. The film will be based on the J.M. Barrie’s classic character as an orphan taken to the magical world of Neverland, where he becomes the savior of the natives and leads a rebellion against evil pirates.
“Peter Pan” fans may be wondering why the film has chosen to feature Blackbeard instead of Captain Hook however there is no word on why the change has taken place. Jason Fuchs has been hired to provide the screenplay while “Arrow” executive producer Greg Berlanti producing under his Berlanti Productions and Sarah Schechter overseeing for Warner Bros.
This film from Wright should not be confused with the similarly-themed “origin story” take on the property is also in the works at Columbia Pictures with Neverland.
The studio has not announced any other talent being eyed for roles in the film or an anticipated release date for the origin-story adaptation.
