According to a report from Variety, Emma Watson has joined Tom Hanks in the lead roles for the upcoming film adaptation of The Circle, the dystopian novel by Dave Eggers.
Watson is set to star as Mae Holland, a young college graduate hired by an Internet conglomerate called the Circle. The powerful organization, co-founded by Hanks’ character, consolidates users’ online information—their social media presences, financial information and even personal communications—into a single web identity, ushering in an era of advanced transparency. The suspenseful narrative explores the dark side of our digital age and the perils of the death of privacy.
This is the second book by Eggers that Hanks has adapted for the screen. The first film adaptation being A Hologram for the King, which is slated to hit theaters this year.
Production of The Circle is set to begin in California this September. It will be directed by James Ponsoldt who also penned the script.
“Emma Watson is one of my favorite actors, and her incredible talent, sensitivity and deep intelligence will bring an electric energy to The Circle,” said Ponsoldt.
The Circle is set for a 2016 release.
