CW Releases Details About New Wonder Woman Series

After the success of their most recent comic book adaptation, “Arrow,” The CW is eyeing a new project. Warner Bros. TV is working to create a pilot for a potential new series based on the Wonder Woman comic book series. The studio has already hired a director to search for the titular heroine in the adaptation.

The project will also include the Wonder Woman origin story written by Allan Heinberg that chronicles the female superhero’s life as a young Amazonian, before she becomes a warrior princess with super powers.

The studio has released an official breakdown of the character for the project which states,

“She comes from a remote, secluded country and until now has spent most of her life as a soldier and a leader on the battlefield. Because of relentless brutality of her life at home, Iris looks at our world with absolute awe and astonishment. She’s delighted and just as often horrified by the aspects of everyday life that we take for granted: skyscrapers, traffic, ice cream. It’s all new and fascinating and sometimes slightly troubling to her. Iris is completely unschooled in our world, our culture, our customs. And she’s completely inexperienced at interpersonal relationships. She has no social filter, does not suffer fools, and tends to do and say exactly what’s on her mind at all times. She’s bluntly, refreshingly honest. She can tell when you’re lying to her. And she doesn’t have time or patience for politics or tact because she’s too busy trying to experience everything our world has to offer. There are too many sights to see and things to learn and people to care for. Hers is a true, noble, and generous heart. And she will fight and die for the people she loves. Iris is a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic and she will fight to the death to make the world safe for innocents and true romantics everywhere.”

As the script continues to be written, the cast for project is still being hired. There is no word on when the pilot may be done or which actresses they are looking toward to fill the lead role.

‘Arrow’ Most Watched CW Show in 3 Years

The new comic book series, Arrow has hit the bulls eye over at the CW. The network has proudly announced that the ratings for their DC Comics flavored venture have been phenomenal. This is a victory for not just the CW, but for comic adaptations as well.

4.02 million viewers tuned in to the season premier of Arrow, starring Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, Colin Donnell as Tommy, Willa Holland as Thea Queen, with Susanna Thompson as Moira Queen and Paul Blackthorne as Detective Quentin Lance.

That’s a pretty impressive number and the news makes Arrow the most watched telecast on the CW of any show, on any night, in three years whole years. In fact, Arrow‘s premier was the most watched of any CW series premiere since the birth of The Vampire Diaries in 2009. Wow, has it been that long? Yes, it has!

If those aren’t enough statistics to get you excited, then take this! Arrow is also now the most watched show in a Wednesday 8PM time slot for the network in more than three years. Viewership for that time slot has doubled since last year.

Supernatural has its cult following, but Arrow, being the friendly super hero series that it is, also gave that CW series a bit of a leg up. Folks who tuned in for Arrow at 8, stuck around for watching Supernatural at 9, and this probably contributed to Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles’s show having it’s most watched episode ever! And those brothers have been fighting evil since 2005.

Suffice it to say, Wednesday of this week, was one big cause for celebration over at CW headquarters.

Arrow even managed to tie NBC’s original comedies in that time slot. That’s no easy feat. Animal Practice and Guys with Kids air on Wednesdays on NBC. I have to say, I’d rather watch Arrow, too, though. No offense, NBC.

From Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg and David Nutter, the hard-hitting action series reinvents the DC hero. After being marooned for five years on a remote island, billionaire Oliver Queen returns home with a mysterious agenda and very lethal new set of skills that he uses in a war on crime.

If you missed the pilot, get on board with all the action. You can watch the season premier online!

I raise my glass to the execs over at the CW. It was a risky move to cancel Smallville and then bring in Arrow. You hope Smallville viewers will be faithful to the new hero in town, but you can’t be certain they will. Green Arrow also doesn’t strike me as a hero quite as popular as, say, Batman or Superman. So, I’m glad people are tuning in. I hope the lucky streak continues.

Arrow‘s good news may translate as good news for a Marvel flavored comic book TV series. I’m talking about Joss Whedon’s plans to bring S.H.I.E.L.D. to the small screen. We’ll see what develops!

By the by, David Nutter directed the Arrow pilot. He has done directing for two of my favorite series of all time; The X-Files and Space: Above and Beyond. He worked on Smallville and Supernatural as well, and more popular series, too many to list really.

While I was scanning the info for coming episodes of Arrow, I also noticed that episode seven, titled “Muse of Fire”, is directed by David Grossman. He’s been behind the camera for episodes of Buffy, Lost, and Dead Like Me.

‘Arrow’ Dealt DC’s Royal Flush Gang

No hero can shine without being tested by a solid villain. Batman has The Joker (and now Bane). Superman has Lex. Well, Oliver Queen, the wealthy playboy turned vigilante, has got the Royal Flush Gang. Yep, all five of them! …At least, there were five in the comics.

That’s right, Arrow has come to the CW network. In the series, actor Stephen Amell is Arrow, a hip take on classic DC comics hero, Green Arrow. The series premier hit the airwaves on October 10th. Entertainment Weekly thought the show looked promising. The called our hero a “gritty, urban Robin Hood,” and the show, a good deal “darker” than Smallville. Worth giving, “a shot”, har har har.

I’ll tell you what I like about the series. Recurring cast members have been listed as Deadshot and The Huntress. That’s cheer-worthy. But this week’s news revolves around a whole deck of villains.

Series producer Andrew Kreisberg has announced that DC’s Royal Flush Gang has been adapted to appear on Arrow. The pack of villains has found its “King” in actor Currie Graham, known for his role on Criminal Minds. His gang-mate, “Ace” will be portrayed by Kyle Schmid.

You’ll see with the Royal Flush Gang, that the dynamic of the family, and the iconography of the playing cards are going to be there, without the supernatural bent. I think we’ve come up with a really clever way to portray them in a more grounded, realistic world. The Royal Flush Gang are in episode 6, and we’re really proud of that episode. We think it’s one of the most successful attempts at alchemy that we’ve performed. The Huntress is pretty much straight out of the book because she’s such a grounded character, but the Royal Flush Gang were the most outlandish villains from the comics, but they turned out to be our most grounded villains, and the relationship that Oliver has with King, the leader of the gang, we’re really proud of it,” said Kreisberg.

If you’re wondering why the supernatural had to be curbed, its because the comic book version of the group had super human abilities. In the DC universe this is referred to as being metahuman. That’s very similar to the idea of a mutant in the Marvel-verse. “King” could shoot blasts of plasma, “Ace” was a female psychic who could make anyone insane, “Jack” was your basic elastic-man, “Queen” had telekinesis, specifically working with metallic objects, and the final member of the Royal Flush Gang, a guy called “Ten” had the strength of ten men.

Sounds like this could be an episode to watch. I don’t mind the omission of super powers. I think this tends to make everything a little more plausible. Just look at the way Christopher Nolan re-imagined the Bat-mythos in Dark Knight Rises to make a more down to earth Bane and Talia Al Ghul.

Arrow comes from Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg and David Nutter. It’s being hailed as action-packed and unfolds five years of no word from billionaire Oliver Queen. He returns home after his strange sabbatical with a mysterious crusade in mind and crazy new set of skills. Archery anyone? The show also stars Katie Cassidy as Dinah “Laurel” Lance. If that name sounds familiar, comic fans, its because that’s also the name of the Black Canary.

Deadshot To Appear In CW’s Arrow

The CW recently revealed that DC Comics villian Deadshot will in fact appear in their upcoming TV series “Arrow,” an adaptation of The Green Arrow comic series. Canadian actor Michael Rowe will portray the villain in the third episode, “Lone Gunmen.”

Rowe joins Kelly Hu, who will portray China White, and Deathstroke to round out the early list of bad guys Arrow will face.

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim (Green Lantern) explained that Arrow’s take on the character would be more faithful to the source material than DC’s last CW show, Smallville.

“You’ll definitely see the red eye piece, which is the most distinctive, iconic feature of that character, and I will say that with no slam to ‘Smallville’ intended, it’s a much more faithful version of Deadshot than the Deadshot that was in ‘Smallville’.”

But, Guggenheim explains, the show will take liberties with the character.

“In the same way that the pilot is a more grounded and realistic take on the material, our Deadshot is a more grounded and realistic take on the character than the fully costumed and masked super-villain that you see in the comics.”

Guggenheim also spoke about why he cast the unknown Rowe in the role in regards to his physical stature.

“Deadshot doesn’t speak much, so he has to have that physicality,” he says.

Stephen Amell (HBO’s Hung), who will portray the Arrow in the series, says Arrow’s relationship with Deadshot will be complicated.

“I can tell you that they are going to be after some of the same people,” Amell says. “Oliver does have a code. Obviously, it doesn’t include ‘no killing,’ as we’ve established so far, but there is a code. I don’t think Deadshot has it. I don’t think he respects his methods, which puts him in Oliver’s sights.”

The plot to Arrow sees billionaire Oliver Queen returning home with after being marooned on a remote island for five years. When he returns he has a mysterious new agenda, and a lethal skill set he will use to fight a war on crime.

Arrow will premiere Wednesday October 10 at 8 p.m.

The series co-stars Colin Donnell as Tommy, Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Willa Holland as Thea Queen, with Susanna Thompson as Moira Queen and Paul Blackthorne as Detective Quentin Lance. Greg Berlanti (Green Lantern), Andrew Kreisberg (Warehouse 13, Fringe), and David Nutter (Smallville, Game Of Thrones) will also join Guggenheim as  co-executive producers.

Could Battle Royale Become A Television Series?

The 1999 novel and 2000 film, Battle Royale, is a cult classic and many fans are yearning for a remake. However, thanks to the recent release and extreme popularity of The Hunger Games, a film remake is looking less likely.

But, could a new television series be on the horizon?

The LA Times recently reported that the CW has been in recent discussion for adapting the novel into a one hour drama series on the network.

If they do decide they want to move forward with the project, they will need to gain the approval of Takami, which according to Japanese law must be secured before any remake can begin.

The CW argues that the television show could flourish much like the popular series, “The Vampire Diaries” found success despite the Twilight Saga dominating the film industry.

While the talks are only in the preliminary stages, the network (CW) would acquire the rights of Koushun Takami’s underlying novel, then unpack and expand on it for an hourlong dramatic series.

Producers Neal Moritz and Roy Lee had been working on a new film way before Suzanne Collins published her novel series, but the project stalled when New Line operations consolidated in 2008.

Then when The Hunger Games was released, the film remake was effectively killed.

Hopefully a television series can get off the ground. While it wont be ideal to fans who want a film reboot (we can also assume it will not be in anyway as gory and brutal as the film and novel) the TV series could be something to look forward to.

First Image From CW’s Arrow Released

The news regarding the CW’s upcoming television series, “Arrow” has been sparse. But today the CW released the first image from the show, featuring Stephen Amell and Oliver Queen/Green Arrow.

The series will be based on the comic books originally published by DC Comics. It was created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp, he first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 in November 1941. Since the revival of comics of late, he has been popular among comic book fans and most writers have taken an urban, gritty approach to the character.

As the general story goes, Oliver Queen gets shipwrecked on an island and learns to survive using a bow. Over the course of years, Queen eventually makes it back to civilization and back to his life as a billionaire; who owns a mansion and a very unreliable yacht. You can see some of the character profiles that CW has released for the show here. There is no word yet on who is set to play the rest of the cast though.

Having problems reintegrating with his former life, Queen snaps and decides to renounce his playboy/celebutard ways by helping the weak and downtrodden. Instead of giving to charities or using his money and influence to help society, Queen instead takes on a mission to personally handle crime as a masked vigilante.

Armed only with his billions of dollars, access to the latest crime fighting technology, supporting cast of quirky yet over talented allies, and a crippling dependency on bows and arrows, Oliver Queen dons a mask and calls himself the Green Arrow.

The suit that Arrow will wear in his newest incarnation on television was designed by three time Oscar winning costume designer, Colleen Atwood.

“Arrow” pilot director/executive producer David Nutter said:

“When I directed the pilot for ‘Smallville,’ I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero. ‘Arrow’ is a different show — darker and harder-edged — but it’s the same core idea. We’re creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things. Colleen Atwood’s great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort.”

I will have to give them props. “Arrow” doesn’t look nearly as lame (at least in this image) as I expected the CW to make him. He kind of looks bad-ass but I think it is safe to assume that the show will have a ton of love interest drama and backstabbing that the CW is infamous for having in every one of their shows.

Stephen Amell to become Green Arrow

We announced that the CW had given the Green Arrow the green light less than two weeks ago but the CW isn’t wasting time casting for the show. It was recently reported that The CW has cast Stephen Amell as the lead character, “Oliver Queen.”

“Arrow” is based on the comic books published by DC Comics. Created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp, he first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 in November 1941. While initially throughout his first twenty-five years, Green Arrow was not a significant hero. In the late 1960s, however, writer Denny O’Neil chose to have him lose his fortune, this put him in a unique working class advantage that many people could identify with. In 1970, he was paired with the more law-and-order-oriented hero Green Lantern in a groundbreaking, socially conscious comic book series. Since then added to the revival of comics of late, he has been popular among comic book fans and most writers have taken an urban, gritty approach to the character.  Continue reading
