The big screen adaptation of The Maze Runner finally released in theaters and it has already been green lit for a sequel that will release as soon as September 2015. The news was announced by 20th Century Fox via Twitter with the first piece of concept art for the film which you can see above.

The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows the story of Thomas (played by Dylan O’Brien), a young man who wakes up to find himself in a community of kids welcoming him to the “Glade” – a large expanse of land completely surrounded by a concrete maze.

The now-franchise is based on the young adult book series of the same name written by James Dashner. The sequel film, titled The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials will release next year on September 18. Wes Ball will also direct the sequel.

The book series has a third book titled “The Death Cure” meaning the film will possibly be turned into a trilogy. Or a four film franchise if it goes the way of similar films such as The Hunger Games.

Despite the fact that the film adaptation of “The Maze Runner” hasn’t released in theaters yet, it appears that a sequel is already on the mind of the studio and director Wes Ball. He revealed his plans at this year’s San Diego Comic Con.

The Maze Runner is based on the post apocalyptic novel written by James Dashner. It follows Thomas (played by Dylan O’Brien in the film), who, along with his fellow abductees, must escape the eponymous maze they wake up in.

The novel has two sequels, “The Scorch Trials” and “The Death Cure.” If the first film is successful in the box office, Ball could turn the series into a film franchise. 20th Century Fox has already acquired the film rights to “The Scorch Trials” in a proactive move.

The Maze Runner is set to be released on September 19, 2014.

The big screen adaptation of The Maze Runner is almost here and we have a brand new still featuring a few of the Gladers holding long wooden poles. The film is scheduled to be released later this year and an official trailer has yet to come. You can see the still above.

The film was directed by Wes Ball and is based on the novel by James Dashner. The Maze Runner is the first book in a young-adult dystopian science fiction trilogy. The official plot is as follows:

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. He has no recollection of his parents, his home, or how he got where he is. His memory is blank. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade, a large expanse enclosed by stone walls. Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning, for as long as anyone can remember, the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night, for just as long, they’ve closed tight. Every thirty days a new boy is delivered in the lift. And no one wants to be stuck in the Maze after dark. The Gladers were expecting Thomas’s arrival. But the next day, a girl is sent up- the first girl ever to arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers. The Gladers have always been convinced that if they can solve the maze that surrounds the Glade, they might find their way home… wherever that may be. But it’s looking more and more as if the Maze is unsolvable. And something about the girl’s arrival is starting to make Thomas feel different. Something is telling him that he might just have some answers- if he can only find a way to retrieve the dark secrets locked within his own mind.

It stars Dylan O’Brien as Thomas, Kaya Scodelario as Teresa, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Newt, and Will Poulter as Gally.
