Natalie Portman Announced To Play Lady Macbeth

2013 Vanity Fair Oscar Party

Yesterday we reported that Michael Fassbender had signed on the play the titular character in a upcoming movie adaptation of “Macbeth.” Today it has been revealed that Natalie Portman has also signed on to the film and will play Lady Macbeth. Fassbender and Portman were set to work together on Jane Got a Gun, but Fassbender departed the project prior to production. Portman can also soon be seen reprising her role as Jane Foster in Thor: The Dark World.

Jacob Koskoff and Todd Louiso will provide the screenplay for Macbeth with Iain Canning and Emile Sherman producing.

The tale of “Macbeth” is considered one of his darkest and most powerful tragedies. Set in Scotland, the play dramatizes the corroding psychological and political effects produced when its protagonist, the Scottish lord Macbeth, chooses evil as the way to fulfill his ambition for power. He commits regicide to become king and then furthers his moral descent with a reign of murderous terror to stay in power, eventually plunging the country into civil war. In the end, he loses everything that gives meaning and purpose to his life before losing his life itself.

“Macbeth” has previously been adapted several times already. One of the more recent ones being a faithful remake in 2006 by Geoffrey Wright with Sam Worthington in the lead while. Another adaptation released just a few years earlier from Billy Morissette, restaged the action to a 1970’s fast food chain in Scotland, PA.

There is no word yet on who else will star in the period drama or a projected release date for the film.
