The Wizard of Oz reboots and adaptations just don’t stop coming. A new version of the classic world from the mind of L. Frank Baum, is about to hit the small screen this time. Deadline has reported that director Timur Bekmambetov will be serving as executive producer and potentially directing an upcoming miniseries called “Warriors of Oz” which will be airing on SyFy.
The adaptation would take place in a post apocalyptic future version of Oz after it was taken over by an evil wizard. The Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion are to be reimagined as three warriors themselves, Heartless, Brainless and Coward as they journey across the wasteland.
Earlier this year we saw Sam Raimi’s version of the Oz world on the big screen with his release of Oz The Great and Powerful. On May 9th, 2014, we will also see Summertime Entertainment release their animated project, Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return.
Post-apocalyptic tales of bleak humanity are plentiful right now in almost all forms of media. It is easy to get stuck in the same themes of internal and external struggles with cookie cutter backgrounds of desolation. Adding this well-known genre to the Wizard of Oz offers a unique opportunity to recreate a familiar world with familiar circumstances in a new way. Most people know the world of Oz like the back of their hand. Let’s hope SyFy and Bekmambetov do this right and creatively.
