A Girl’s Read of City of Bones – Part 2

Part two of this novel, was crazy long. It was a major section of plot for the story. I made this section super long, because I had to. I got really into toward the end of the section. It got pretty intense. I hope when them movie comes out, they take this part seriously and do it right.

::::Spoilers Ahead::::

Chapter 10:

This is a freaking long chapter! (But a good one)

I actually enjoyed this chapter because Hodge gave a lot of background about The Circle. I had a ton of questions about the inner workings, like why they were there and why no one left and I felt like this chapter gave a lot of insight to that.

And I still want to know why warlocks have weird names!

There is a pretty standard set up for the story going on. Jace wants to handle the problem on his own, yet Hodge says he is too young. Jace argues, he is skilled enough and decided to do it anyway. This happens in a lot of story and I pretty much expected it to happen.

In this chapter, the clan also head to the Silent City, which by the way is incredibly creepy. I kind of figured that she would not get the answers she wanted because than we would be closer to the end of the book than we actually are.

Best Quotes of this Chapter:

“Clary thought that he must be one of the few people in the world who looked at Jace not as if he were afraid of him, but as if he were afraid for him.”

“If there was one thing she was learning from all this, it was house easy it was to lose everything you had always thought you’d have forever.”

“He’s not a liar at all. Not about the important things. He’ll tell you horrible truths, but he won’t lie. That’s why it’s generally better not to ask him anything unless you know you cant stand to hear the answer.” – Isabelle.

Chapter 11:

So in this chapter, which is incredibly long as well. (These chapters just get longer and longer!), the clan goes to meet Magnus Bane who is the one who wiped out Clary’s memory and mind.

It’s becoming more and more apparent that Jace has feelings for Clary, though he won’t admit it. He flirts with her all the time, but I can’t tell if she knows or if she is trying not to notice it.

Clary suddenly realizes though, why Alec hates her. And while I don’t think it is a good reason, it is an understandable reason. Alec is in love with Jace. I can honestly say that I never saw that coming but it makes such perfect sense! It also brings so much needed humanity to the character of Alec.

While I cant tell whether or not Isabelle was trying to be nice to Clary by dressing her up for the party, but at the same time she uses it for a chance for backhanded comments. I personally think its because Isabelle is jealous of Clary and Jace getting closer. While Clary ended up being incredibly beautiful to both Jace and Simon, I think Isabelle wanted to embarrass her.

Just have to say this again; Jace is becoming so sweet toward Clary! They have to make out or something eventually. I know it.

Chapter 12 & 13:

These two chapters could have rightfully been condensed to one very large chapter, but instead it’s two so I just combined the analysis for them,

Magnus Bane. A great character. The party at Magnus Bane’s house is a great scene. I think the author wrote his character to be pretty charming and funny yet threatening and dark.

Of course motorcycles can fly. Why wouldn’t they? Vampires can do anything! I think that this would be a hard scene to film though when it becomes a film though. I hope that they don’t make leave it out though either. I loved how Jace and Alec put holy water in the gas tank of a motorcycle that runs on demon energies and can’t run in daylight anyway.

There is one quote that sums up this entire section of chapters:

“I think you get my point. Different isn’t better, Clarissa. Your mother was trying to protect you. Don’t throw it back her face.

Damn Simon! He drank some random potion and a party filled with mythical people like faeries, vampires, and “downworlders”. It is not wise to drink something you don’t know! So of course he becomes a rat. Literally. And of course Clary assumes it is her fault and she has to save him.

I was hoping that they clan would have a run in with some actual vampire foes. And tada: this chapter offers that. Simon (as a rat) gets kidnapped by vampires though not on purpose, surprisingly.

Chapter 14:

I have noticed that they talk a lot about Jace’s appearance. Almost every chapter has at least one (if not more) references to how he looks or how handsome he is.  This chapter takes place in a church and Clary goes through some existential queries.

“There might be God, Clary, and there might not be, but I don’t think it matters. Either way we’re on our own.” – Jace.

They meet a young man who, instinctively to me anyway, seems to be a double agent. He appears to be just a bystander, but I have a feeling he totally isn’t.

This plan seems terrible. I mean Simon is a rat, realistically they would have a much more difficult time finding a small rat in a huge hotel inhabited by vampires. Seriously.

And guess what, that boy they meet… is a vampire. Predicted it!

I am interested in seeing how the movie will portray the vampires, because they are actually described in the book in a very creepy way. All pale and gaunt and hanging from the ceiling. I mean they actually seemed pretty terrifying and I hope the film does them justice.

This is a very intense chapter and I don’t want to giveaway a lot about the battle. You’ll have to read the intense chapter all for yourself!

Chapter 15:

So now werewolves are in the mix and help save our protagonists.

Clary also throws her first weapon at a wolf to get away. Clary later admits to Jace that she happened to lose his dagger in the process. It was endearingly sweet actually. Despite everything that happened she was still worried about her losing his dagger.

So they ride away into the sunrise on a motorcycle powered by demon power. It would be really sweet if they didn’t crash as soon as the sun rose because (not) surprisingly it stops working during the daytime, and only works at night.

But thankfully, Simon is ok and no longer in rat form.

Chapter 16:

The fight between Clary and Alec was pretty intense. I understand both sides but they are also both overreacting and more so Alec is being fueled by love rather than logic. For Clary, logic was saving her friend, but Alex was just jealous that he wasn’t with them.

I also hated how mean Alec got. He should never touch a girl like he did Clary even if she said some things that were way out of line and not appropriate.

Simon makes an astute observation in the chapter when he has a heart to heart with Clary. That he has needed her way more then she ever needed him. I think this is actually true. Clary has always acted incredibly independent (that is until Jace came along) and she never relied on others.

It is so freaking obvious that Simon loves Clary and she just doesn’t get it! It is so frustrating and I think its more than just ignoring the fact, but I think she really just doesn’t realize for a long time how he feels, and that frustrates me!

Chapter 17:

I waited the novel up till this point, just for this chapter. As a girl, I love when people finally kiss. There has been tension between Jace and Clary this whole time, and finally, they kiss.

It was incredibly sweet too. In the green house under the stars. I loved it. (Which made the end of the book all the worse, but that’s for another section.)

This is ruined by Simon, which we as readers should have known were going to happen. And he is, let’s say, more than pissed by walking in on them kissing.

Jace is also upset because he thinks that she likes Simon too, which is so obvious not to be true but he feels betrayed.

This chapter starts off so well, and ends on such a bad note. It’s the classic uncomfortable romantic situation.

Simon finally admits he loves her, right in the middle of a screaming fight with Clary. And because of it, Simon leaves angrily.

Chapter 18:

Clary makes a huge revelation in this chapter. She has the power to make things real that she sketches in her notebook. This is huge! She also realizes that the cards her mom made for madam Dorothea, are the same way and that is where the mortal cup is hidden.

With the reluctant help of Simon, and the help of Jace they go to retrieve the cup. The fact that Simon helped despite what had happened proved the level of their friendship and how that they can make it through anything and still be friends.

Something seemed weird about Dorothea in this chapter, like she wasn’t her sweet self. I don’t know if it was just me who had that feeling, because maybe I am just cynical. =]

Chapter 19:

As it turns out, Dorothea is possessed by a demon, and he wants the mortal cup desperately.

There is another huge struggle and battle with the greater demon. Alec is scratched by the demon and almost dies. They rush to the institute because he is dying from the battle.

I got so mad at the end of the chapter.

I didn’t see it coming either. But Hodge betrays the group to Valentine. He summons him once they return with the cup. I thought Hodge was a friend, but he was worse than anyone else because pretended to be a friend.

So Valentine appears and kidnaps Jace. This is climax of the novel. I am really curious to see what happens because it is obvious that Clary is going to go after him.

Chapter 20:

Not much happens in this chapter. Luke does return and him and Clary have a heart to heart about their relationship.

They prepare to go save Jace from Valentine, and despite the fact that Clary hates Luke right now; she must listen to him to get the whole story, and save Jace from certain death.

I love Luke and I hope she understand why he did what he did.
