Constantin to Restart Production on Mortal Instruments Sequel

A few weeks ago the fate of the “Mortal Instruments” film franchise was looking grim. Poor box office performances accompanied with critics panning the film, the studio put the sequel on hold. This week, however, it was announced that the Constantin has decided to push forward with the franchise and begin production on The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes in 2014.

The sequel is based on the second novel of the same name written by novel series author, Cassandra Clare.

City of Bones starred Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower. It opened to $14 million over its first five-day weekend and grossed about $31 million domestically for Sony/Screen Gems. But the film, which was also critically panned, had a reported $60 million budget, with Sony putting up an estimated $60 million more to promote the film’s release.

Martin Moszkowicz, Constantin Film’s head of film and TV, commented on the decision to move forward.

“The fan response, from the blogosphere and the thousands of mails we have received, has encouraged us to keep going,” Moszkowicz told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s been overwhelmingly positive, in contrast to some other YA titles.”

He also added that this time around they will learn from the mistakes made with the first film.

“We are analyzing what we did wrong with the first film — particularly with the positioning and marketing — and what changes we have to make. We are working with a great group of people to reposition the franchise [for City of Ashes].”

Currently, the studio will also be looking at the director, Harald Zwart, and what, if any, mistake he made in the style of City of Bones.

The Mortal Instruments Sequel On Hold After Poor Box Office Performances

I could have seen this coming. You take something that is nearly identical to what audiences have already seen and they get bored. The generic YA supernatural novel series, “The Mortal Instruments,” that was adapted into a film this year bombed at the box office. Now whether the franchise will continue on the big screen is up for review. The series was written by Cassandra Clare and was touted as the next “Twilight” like blockbuster but so far has been largely lackluster (and I will not apologize for that sweet rhyme.)

Two New Cast Members Added To City of Bones

The upcoming film adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s “City of Bones” has almost rounded out is main cast. The author announced the addition of two new cast members yesterday including Aidan Turner as Luke and CCH Pounder as Madame Dorothea.

Turner is most known for playing (incredibly sexy) vampire Mitchell on the British “Being Human.” He also is gaining attention for his upcoming role in The Hobbit trilogy in which he will play the character of Kili. Turner is set to play Luke in “City of Bones,” a character that is a father figure to Clary as well as a protector to her family.

“Luke has a hell of a dark past despite his current mild-mannered, bookstore-owning ways. The scars he bears belie his gentle heart — but he could tear you apart with his teeth if you threatened something he cared about,” says Clare about Luke.

CCH Pounder has been in several television shows over the years and has a wealth of experience in the industry. She is set to play the role of Madame Dorothea, Clary’s next door neighbor who is definitely more than she appears at first.

“You may know her from The Shield. Or The X-Files. Or Warehouse 13. Or ER. Or The West Wing. Or pretty much every cool show in the known universe. Our director’s wanted to work with her for ages and I think she will be amazing,” says Clare.

Turner and Pounder join the already star studded cast that includes:

  • Lily Collins is Clary Fray
  • Jamie Campbell Bower is Jace Wayland
  • Robert Sheehan is Simon Lewis
  • Jemima West is Isabelle Lightwood
  • Kevin Durand is Pangborn
  • Robert Maillet is Blackwell
  • Lena Headey is Jocelyn Fray
  • Godfrey Gao is Magnus Bane
  • Jared Harris is Hodge
  • Aidan Turner is Luke
  • CCH Pounder is Madame Dorothea

The film is being directed by Harald Zwart.

Kevin Zeggers Cast In City of Bones Adaptation

Actor Kevin Zeggers has been cast as Alec Lightwood in the upcoming film adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones.

City of Bones is the first novel in the series, The Mortal Instruments.

Alec Lightwood is the brother to Isabelle Lightwood, who is set to be played by Jemima West. Alec also has feelings for Jace Wayland and later Magnus Bane.

Zeggers joins main characters Lily Collins as Clary Fray and Jamie Campbell-Bower as Jace Wayland. Also cast is Lena Headey, Jared Harris, Kevin Durand, and Robert Maillet.

City of Bones follows teen Clary Fray, who discovers she is a descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, an order of half-angel warriors who protect the world from demons. The rest of the characters include her best friend Simon, who is in love with her, while she has feelings for fellow shadowhunter Jace Wayland, who also may or may not be her brother, and siblings  Isabelle and Alec Lightwood, with Alec Harboring feelings for Jace as well.

Screen Gems is producing the adaptation with Harald Zwart directing.

The film is scheduled for release on August 23, 2013.

Game of Thrones Star Heads To City of Bones

Sony recently announced that “Game of Thrones” star Lena Headey has been added to the cast of the upcoming film adaptation, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Headey, currently playing the role of Cersei Lannister in the hit show, will be playing the role of Jocelyn Fray in the film.

Jocelyn is the mother of main character, Clary, a young women who joins the shadow hunters in an attempt to save her mother. Her disappearance is key to the story, though she won’t appear on screen for most of the movie.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is the big screen adaptation based on the first book of the young adult fantasy book series written by Cassandra Clare and set in present day New York City. It centers on Clary Fray, a seemingly ordinary teenager who discovers she’s a descendant of a line of Shadow hunters, a secret group of half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect the world from demons. When her mother disappears, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters to find her. They introduce Clary to Downworld, the dangerous alternate of New York filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.

Two other actors have also been added to the growing cast list. Jared Harris will play Hodge Starkweather. A teacher to the young shadow hunters. According to the author’s blog, “Hodge is also a really complicated character. He’s not entirely bad, not entirely good. He’s a brilliant man led down a bad path a long time ago and he can’t turn back, but he does love those kids he tutored … I think (Harris will) really nail Hodge’s moral dilemma.”

Godfrey Gao will be taking the much coveted role of Magnus Bane, a flamboyant hipster who is the illustrious High Warlock of Brooklyn.  Clare says of Gao’s casting, “Godfrey is, in addition to being all gorgeous and stuff, super-talented (his audition was awesome), loves the books, and is, like Magnus, ridiculously tall.”

The three new cast members join Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace Wayland, Robert Sheehan as Simon, Kevin Durand as Pangborn, Jemima West as Isabelle Lightwood and wrestler Robert Maillet as Blackwell. The role of the villain of the story, Valentine has not yet been revealed in regards to casting.

Filming is set to begin next month with a release date for the film on August 23, 2013.
