DreamWorks to Adapt Popular: Vintage Wisdom for a Modern Geek

Dreamworks has officially secured the film rights to the upcoming nonfiction novel, “Popular: Vintage Wisdom for a Modern Geek.” The book is set to hit shelves next April and is the result of an eighth-grade journal kept by the now-15-year-old Amy B. Harris, who decided to live her school year based on the advice given in the 1951 self-help book “Betty Cornell’s Glamour Guide For Teens.”

Harris presents her thesis for the project in the book intro:

And so, I embark my grand experiment. Every month of this school year I will follow Betty Cornell’s advice on the topics in her book: dieting, hair, makeup, posture, and attitude, among others – no matter how embarrassing or difficult.

I definitely have my work cut out for me. That is if I’m not already beyond help. I am 5’2” with light brown skin that breaks out in acne on a regular basis. I am gawky, slouchy, and just a little bit lumpy. I have non-existent hips and a chest almost as flat as the cover of Betty Cornell’s book. I wear glasses and braces. I do all my clothes shopping at Walmart and second-hand stores. I spend more time on algebra than I do on my hair.

Maybe things will change. Can popularity advice from more than half a century ago still be relevant? I’ll find out. Crazier things have happened, right? Men have walked on the moon and society has found a way to grow square watermelons.

Betty Cornell has become my new soul mate, and I am married to her every word. For better or worse.”

Amy B. Harris, previously worked on”Sex and the City,” and “The Carrie Diaries,” will adapt the screenplay with Andrew Lazar and Kristie Macosko producing.

Lionsgate has debuted the final trailer for the upcoming film, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The film will see the return of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen along with Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones and Willow Shields also reprising their roles.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the second installment in The Hunger Games trilogy. The film picks up where The Hunger Games left off as Katniss and Peeta have returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour’ of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

The new trailer debuted during the fifth inning of Game 4 of the World Series on Fox. It contains very little dialogue but does feature President Snow, played by Donald Sutherland, in voice-over, saying: “Miss Everdeen, you fought very hard in the arena. But they were games. Would you like to be in a real war?” The clip then cuts to him watching Katniss, played by JenniferLawrence, on a TV screen as she wields her bow and arrow in the Hunger Games arena.

The trailer also includes a glimpse at Katniss’ and Peeta’s (Josh Hutcherson) fiery costumes as well as some intense action inside the arena.

Francis Lawrence is set to direct a screenplay from Simon Beaufoy and Michael Arndt.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire hits theaters Nov. 22. Watch the final trailer below:

Constantin to Restart Production on Mortal Instruments Sequel

A few weeks ago the fate of the “Mortal Instruments” film franchise was looking grim. Poor box office performances accompanied with critics panning the film, the studio put the sequel on hold. This week, however, it was announced that the Constantin has decided to push forward with the franchise and begin production on The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes in 2014.

The sequel is based on the second novel of the same name written by novel series author, Cassandra Clare.

City of Bones starred Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower. It opened to $14 million over its first five-day weekend and grossed about $31 million domestically for Sony/Screen Gems. But the film, which was also critically panned, had a reported $60 million budget, with Sony putting up an estimated $60 million more to promote the film’s release.

Martin Moszkowicz, Constantin Film’s head of film and TV, commented on the decision to move forward.

“The fan response, from the blogosphere and the thousands of mails we have received, has encouraged us to keep going,” Moszkowicz told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s been overwhelmingly positive, in contrast to some other YA titles.”

He also added that this time around they will learn from the mistakes made with the first film.

“We are analyzing what we did wrong with the first film — particularly with the positioning and marketing — and what changes we have to make. We are working with a great group of people to reposition the franchise [for City of Ashes].”

Currently, the studio will also be looking at the director, Harald Zwart, and what, if any, mistake he made in the style of City of Bones.
