The Walking Dead Game Pulls a Redeker Plan

The Walking Dead franchise splits off again, this time becoming a video game adaptation. Originally a graphic novel series, The Walking Dead has since been adapted by AMC into the most watched cable show currently in the history of television.

The franchise is hot and there are lots of merch already out there for The Walking Dead. Not many television series inspire action figures of their characters or melee weapon sets like machetes and knives. Yes, the stuff television Carl finds in the show is a product placement.

So if the franchise is so hot, why isn’t the game out yet?

Well first off, a quality game takes time to develop. Especially for high graphic consoles that don’t want the feel of a 1980’s side scroller or a generic flash game. Development of a game can take years for a console and is at a disadvantage when compared to say, a social media game found on Facebook.

Secondly, investors don’t care about any reason you give them. The franchise is almost at it’s apex of popularity and Telltale needs to come up with a solution to their dilemma. You know, aside from putting the game out there to begin with.

Enter the webs how, “Playing Dead” a web series designed at looking into the development of the game. Is it meant to be a take on playing possum, pretending you’ve ceased to be and joining the choir invisible? Or can it be taken as someone playing the walking dead video? Honestly the title itself is a bit unsavoury. I’m almost cranky over it for no explicable reason. I thought, “Talking Dead” was a good show name; a show that examines the series and thoughts on zombie survival. Playing Dead just invokes my ADHD to look at other things.

The show is actually by Telltale. It’s a stall tactic to reassure potential customers that this hasn’t gone away yet, and they’re oh so close to getting it done. Don’t leave yet!

In the show, developers and designers are asked what appears to be scripted questions about the game. They talk about the tone, progress and how everything ties in with the comic book. That’s time they could have been using to actually make the game.

Here is the official description of the game from Telltale’s official website:

“Learn about the game by watching PLAYING DEAD, a video series that takes you behind the scenes of the creation of the upcoming The Walking Dead video game based on Robert Kirkman’s award-winning comic series. Playing Dead is the online source for exclusive looks at The Walking Dead video game and interviews with the talent responsible for bringing the world of The Walking Dead to life. Check this space for new episodes of Playing Dead regularly.”

In the novel World War Z written by Max Brooks, a plan was enacted to give humanity the best chances of survival. This was called the Redeker plan, an intentional sacrifice of a human population in favor of a more defensible location. This is what Telltale is doing right now. Playing Dead tries to keep the interest alive and bring focus to a game that’s unavailable.

The game is touted as a adventure game but it seems it’ll be more of a Choose Your Own Adventure type as you’re not given free reign of the world unless it’s part of the puzzle or quest. In the interview with lead designers Jake Rodkin and Sean Vanaman, they discuss how the game will be split into five episodes and any decision a player makes will carry through month-to-month. So a character saved or abandoned might come back to haunt you later. This seems to be more like Telltale’s Back to the Future game, with it’s decision tree type gaming. I certainly hope their Walking Dead game isn’t as cartoon like in appearance.

The next episode of Playing Dead promises an talk with The Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta. Yes, a movie about a blind man who’s deadly with a blade. I saw the movie too, it was called Zatoichi when I last saw it reincarnated.

The Hunt for The Amazing Spider-Man is On!

What began as a launch for the new trailer for the upcoming movie, The Amazing Spider-Man, has quickly turned into a scavenger hunt gone viral.

Within the trailer, obscured by quick moving lights and explosion of sound, there were hidden words that read, “Mark of the Spider-Man” If you go to the website for “markofthespider-man.com”, you’ll end up at a website with six static filled screens and the new rebooted spider-man logo. I’m not sure who’s goal in life it is to find these things, but day-uhm! There’s no way I could have seen that with my ADHD. This type of marketing has been reminiscent of last years viral treasure hunt for the movie, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Using the same words, you can find the site’s matching Twitter feed @MarkofSpiderman, which has been tweeting longitude and latitude coordinates for several major US cities. Each of these coordinates pointed to a comic book shop accompanied by the message, “Propery of Peter Parker… Lost”.

In a turn of luck for one comic book reporter; not me, never me; one of the shops turned out to be a local area distributor, Secret Headquarters in Silverlake, Los Angeles. The SuperHeroHype’s reporter made a quick sprint down the street to find a discarded backpack.

Yes, secret hidden messages, codes to break, a country that is overtly suspicious of packages and then a discarded backpack in one of six major U.S. Cities.

Instead of returning the backpack or trying to find them; it clearly says Property of Peter Parker on it; the contents were looted. Inside contained: Safety goggles (They do nothing!), Physics and Chemistry textbooks, keys, a MetroCard, a notebook loaded with class notes, sunglasses, drawing pencils, a pencil sharpener, a sketchbook, a binder, film canisters, photo contact sheets and a small canister of what appear to be watch parts; probably to make his web shooters look all steam punk. There are even running shoes in the bag, all modified of course for, uhm… special needs. I would like to take this opportunity to note that the sketchbook which contains preliminary drawings of the Spider-Man costume has a mask that looks like Strong Bad’s of Home Star Runner. Also the bag does not contain any sewing equipment or space age costume material that I have gripped about. You can read that article here.

Parker also collected some well crafted Daily Bugle clippings about a certain masked vigilante, including one that reads, “This letter will be the first of many, and the first letter is always key.” When applying the cipher of first letter to the black block of text, it reads “slashprepare” which I can only assume is a reference back to the viral website. So here I went typing in /prepare. This sent me to a a screen that looks like its telling you to click on the six screen in a particular order.

I did that. Nothing. Turns out that it’s already been triggered and each screen now shows the name of the cities in question and an ominous countdown timer for each.

Meanwhile, in another part of town… The film is set for release on July 3rd and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. Directed by Marc Webb; heh, Webb of Spier-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man arrives with a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel comic by Stan Lee.

Here’s the official movie synopsis for The Amazing Spider-Man:

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Oblivion on the Horizons for Morgan Freeman

Freeman will join the cast that includes Tom Cruise as the lead role of Jak, Andrea Riseborough and Olga Kurylenko in this Universal release.  This film was conceptualized by and to be directed by Tron: Legacy User, Joseph Kosinski.

With the rise of movies adapted from popular teen novels and comic books, the crafty director has gone one step further and is creating a comic book to be released before his movie. The comic book which is called Oblivion will be released sometime in 2012 by Radical Comics, to be co-written by Kosinski and Arvid Nelson, creator of Rex Mundi. A preview of the graphic novel was released at the end of 2010 Comic-Con with some rather snazzy concept art.

So this will be Radical Publishing’s first venture beyond comic books. The comic will be done in a format that features 40 fully painted landscape images that will accompany the prose. So more like a Winnie-The-Pooh old school children format, rather than frame by frame comic book style that we’ve come to expect. I believe that this is how the movie 300 started as a comic book. Ow, my mind just got a visual of Pooh wearing a Spartan costume. So bad!

Kosinski film adaptation of this unreleased comic was originally turned down by Disney, telling him that they will not produce this film and essentially told to shop around some more with other studios and producers. Oblivion was later picked up by Universal Pictures.

It’s unclear what role Freeman will play in this apocalyptic science fiction love story (Is there any other kind of love story?) but even if it’s the disembodied narrator’s voice, it’ll still be cool. “Get busy living, or get busy dying.”

The official description of the story on Radical Publishing website:

“futuristic science fiction love story that takes place in an apocalyptic future where most of the population lives in clouds above an earth surface that has been rendered for the most part uninhabitable. An earthbound soldier — stuck there repairing drones that patrol and blast a savage alien life form — encounters a beautiful woman who crashed in a craft, and they have an experience that forces him to question his world view.”

Reading the many variations of this description online, this is what I’ve cobbled together and predict the story will go.

Jak, the main character of the story, is a war-weary repairman with a military background. His sole function is to repair and maintain robots that fight for the User; cue Daft Punk playing in the background. These drones act like terminators on an alien species, who are referred to as scavengers. The scavengers stalk the ruins what appears to be a polluted and destroyed Earth, doing what they can to survive. While somewhere beyond the clouds is the human race, living on a low orbiting spaceship and being all overlord like.

Jak then discovers a spaceship with a hot actress inside. With her help, he slowly pieces together that the planet is either not Earth or a planet filled with savage aliens, but an alien civilization filled with vengeful aliens that humans have nearly wiped out; because they want the resources or to colonize.

Freeman will play the philosopher like leader of the space humans and attempt to stop Jak from reprogramming all the drones from stopping the badness.

For the M. NightShamWow ending, the crashed spacecraft is really a burrowing vehicle where other humans; the poor; live far underground in Zion, while the rich aristocracy live in the clouds.

Look Out! Here Comes the Amazing Spider-Man Trailer

A new trailer was released by Sony for The Amazing Spider-Man that includes some new footage. The trailer which is best seen in 3D has at times a striking resemblance to the video game trailer for Mirror’s Edge. The film which will be released on July 3rd will be available in theaters in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen and Sally Field.

The first things I noticed in this new trailer was Captain Stacy being played by Denis Leary; he really plays a convincing… Well if you’re old enough, you know. The next thing to hit me was the realization that Emma Stone was playing Gwen Stacy; who I agree with the internet in saying that she would have been a more convincing Mary-Jane Watson.  Stone already did well as a red head in Easy A.

How exactly does a science obsessed teen know how to sew that well? One of the things that’s never addressed in the films is how Peter Parker manages to sew together such a complicated body suit. Whether it’s the raised texture from the original films or the ribbed for his pleasure version in the new film, both materials are not off the shelf fabrics. Maybe Parker created the fabrics with science, owing to the radioactive blood again for passing on the ability to weave complicated webs to produce high tech fabrics. I’m still having problems fixing the ends of my pants ’cause they’re too long and being destroyed by my boots. If this new suit is any indication of the movie, it appears that the new take will be darker and gritty compared to that of Rami’s Spider-Man.

So what annoyed me in the original film is how the webs are organic and come out of Spider-Man’s wrists; rather than other orifices that would approximate a spider’s anatomy better. Which is annoying, because some of the best bits in the comics is when Spidey runs out of web fluid and has to change his cartridges out before going splat; or chuck them into the maws of a lizard who punctures the canisters in his mouth. In this trailer, you clearly see Parker experimenting with mechanical web-spinners.

Also what annoys me to this day are my failed web spinners I tried building as a kid. Wrist mounting a re-purposed supersoaker, filled with a rubber cement mixture solution does not spin webs, it clogs sinks. The only good part of my experiment; that got me severely disciplined for ruining the sink; was how I created the pressure release trigger for the device. A few months later I saw it built into the official Spider-Man wrist mounted silly string shooters. I nerd raged in the Toys R Us that day.

The Extended Super Bowl Spot for Marvel’s The Avengers!

There was a collective geekasm on the internet following the Super Bowl as comic book fans went wild over the slew of commercials aired. For some, waiting for the ads to be released online was more entertaining than the sport itself; I know that I enjoyed watching the over the top commercials.

In the commercial lineup were a number of trailers with never seen before footage and Marvel’s The Avengers did not disappoint. Opening on May 4 in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters, the film directed by Joss Whedon; Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog, All Things Nerdawesome!; will feature a large list of stars and heroes. There’s Robert Downey Jr. as the Arrogant Iron Man, Chris Evans as Evil Ex… Er… Uhm… I mean Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, God of Abs; Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow; with superpowers of martial arts and using a gun; Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye; Updated to be more like Bullseye but more badass; Tom Hiddleston as the anemic Loki, Stellan Skarsgård as some supporting character from the Thor movie that analyzes the cosmic cube, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

The Avengers team lineup has changed a number of times throughout the ages, but with tie ins from other Marvel movies, I expected; no, wanted; to see Spider-man and Wolverine part of the assembled crew. Spider-man for his wise cracks; doesn’t need alcohol like Stark; and Wolverine for his no-nonsense slice you up attitude. The movie seems to be based on one of Marvel’s many reboots of their comic universes, this one being their Ultimates series.

With the end of movie Easter Eggs for the Avengers related scenes peppered throughout other Marvel superhero movies, the excitement has been building for a long time. I thought it was getting so out of hand; and awesome; that I was sure I was going to see Nick Fury show up at the end of Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World and invite Mister Pilgrim to join the Avengers.

Black Sabbath T-Shirt: Check. Ironman on full blast: Check.

Besides the hype and internet agreement that the trailer delivered the good, it’s the little things about the trailer which makes me want to see the movie. First there’s Tony Stark referring to the Avengers as “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” which puts the Amazing in Spider-man and Incredible into Hulk. Then there’s Stark wearing a Black Sabbath shirt; I Am Ironman!; playing knifey-spoony with Loki. The best part of the trailer is the protective circle of win made by all the Avengers in a circle crane shot; better than any slow motion shot of the heroes walking in a line over debris and fire.

Bite Sized Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance Trailers

Three more TV spots for Colombia Picture’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance aired; one which aired during the pre-game show for the Super Bowl. Each spot was a mini copy of the official trailer using slightly different imagery or audio.

Come February 17, Nicolas Cage will once again hit the big screen as Johnny Blaze. This, “Gritty” new vision for the character will show Blaze struggling with his inner demons. As the flaming skull superhero for the movie adaptation, the Ghost Rider’s purpose on the mortal realm will be to act as the Devil’s bounty hunter. Directed by Mark Neveldine and Bryan Taylor; Chev-Chelly-Crank-Os; the Ghost Rider will risk everything to save a young boy from the devil; who’s trying to take human form; and hopefully rid himself of his curse forever.

The movie trailers have shown more bubbling and boiling of tar like leather and flaming pee. Hoping to out-do; or even distance themselves from; the 2003 movie of Ghost Rider, it appears that touting the franchise as dark and gritty is the sell point. Is this admission that the previous movie was fun and campy? I’m still trying to get over the poor man’s Batman known as the Daredevil. His superpower was to be able to see; the better to sue you; but I’m still trying to unsee the movie version.

In the past, I’ve created a running theory on how to determine if a Nicholas Cage movie will be good or not. Originally the theory was that the longer the hair, the worse the movie, but as time progressed, the idea had to be adapted. Using simple observational skills, I’ve postulated that the better groomed or kept Cage’s hair is, the better the movie. The wilder or worse the hair, the worse the movie will be.

Nicholas Cage's hair: Short and Neat

Cage; who seems to be accepting any script that comes his way; nearly destroys my theory by making me question which hair I’m suppose to be observing. The hair for Johnny Blaze, or the flaming hairless skull that is the Ghost Rider. In the trailers I’ve seen, Johnny Blaze’s hair is all over the place. While the CGI Ghost Rider is on fire; which is wild and out of control. So both do not meet the prerequisite for being well groomed. Ergo, the movie should flop.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen a reworking or reboot of a marvel film superhero flop. At the zenith of the Spider-man franchise popularity, superhero movies were being cranked out as fast as they could film them. Some of them were not so good and fans were not forgiving. So after assessing the damages done, some movies were either redone or a sequel was reworked. The Incredible Hulk (2008) smashed the Hulk (2003) as a sequel. The Punisher (2004) was replaced with Punisher: War Zone (2008). While some movies like Electra were so bad that they were forced from the collective consciousness a la Highlander II; not even the sequels acknowledge it’s existence.

Long and Crazy

Also, if there’s a superhero who’s the Spirit of Vengeance, that would be Detective Comic’s Spectre; the actual wrath of God, not the devil’s errand boy that Marvel has.

Octavia Spencer Takes a Ride on the Snowpiercer

Octavia Spencer, the co-star of the award-winning film, The Help, has joined the cast of the upcoming sci-fi thriller Snowpiercer.

The Snow Piercer which is based on the French graphic novel “Le Transperceneig” is about the only survivors of the human species who are living on a massive train that goes around in an endless loop. This train which breaks the laws of thermodynamics by running forever even after an ice age hits; is massive and is divided in a hierarchical system. The rich go to the front, poor to the end. Contained within this chain are military carts and food supplies. Like any class system, there are always those that aim to misbehave and go about with a revolution.

Published in 1983, the post-apocalyptic future, black and white comic was made by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette. The book has since been translated to Korean where it may have finally made it’s way to director Bong Joon-ho; who co-wrote and directed the comedy-horror classic The Host. Bong Joon-ho bought the rights to the comic in 2005 and will be teaming up with Park Chan-wook (The director of Oldboy! *GLEE!*) and Dooho Choi to produce the movie. The most recent draft for the project was written by American screenwriter, Kelly Masterson, who is best know for writing the screenplay for the film “Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead.”

Spencer will also be joining a star studded cast which includs Chris Evans, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton and star of The Host, Korean actor Song Kang-ho, reports Heat Vision. Currently set to shoot Mandate’s untitled Diablo Cody project, Spencer will then move on to Snow Piercer at the end of April. There she will play a passenger on the super train who joins the revolution to save her son.

Since the comic is available in French, Korean and German, hopefully I can find an English scanlation somewhere out there I can read. My current speculation about the film is that the train is somehow responsible for the ice age as the power source that allows it to run forever is introducing entropy into Earth’s system and screwing around with the second law of thermodynamics; perpetual energy at the cost of the free ambient energy. Shutting it down may fix the long white night.

As a fan of The Host and an absolute fanatic of Oldboy, I have high expectations for the Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook team up, but it sounds an awful lot like the 2008 movie, City of Ember, which of course is also set in a post-apocalyptic world. Instead of being stuck on a train, the inhabitants of Ember are underground and running out of supplies and power.

As I’m currently obsessed with horror movies, I hope the snow thaws and out come the zombies.
