Tomas Alfredson To Adapt “The Snowman”

snowman

The film adaptation of the novel “The Snowman” by Jo Nesbo will be directed by Tomas Alfredson! Soren Sveistrup will co-draft the screenplay alongside Alfredson.

The project was originally planned by Martin Scorsese but fell through. Alfredson is most known for his work on Let the Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

The seventh entry in Nesbo’s “Harry Hole” series, “The Snowman” is officially described as follows:

It is November in Oslo and the first snow of the year has fallen. Birte Becker comes home from work and praises the snowman her husband and son have made in the garden. But they haven’t made a snowman. As the family stand by the sitting room window looking out in amazement at the snowman, the son notices that it is facing the house. The black eyes are staring at the window. At them.

Detective Inspector Harry Hole receives an anonymous letter signed “The Snowman.” Later he finds an alarming common thread in all the old disappearance cases. Married women go missing the day the first snow falls. That same night Sylvia Pedersen is fighting her way through the first snow in a forest outside Oslo. She knows she is running for her life, but she doesn’t know what from. Nor does she know what lies ahead. Fortunately.

Scorsese remains aboard the project as an executive producer alongside Nesbo and Niclas Salomonsson as well as Working Title’s Liza Chasin and Amelia Granger.

Ron Howard, one of the most impressive filmmakers of our lifetime, has announced his plans to bring “The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair” to the big screen for Warner Bros. Pictures. The film will be based on the novel of Joel Dicker.

The novel was published initially in France in 2013. It was an international bestseller drawing praise from critics and fans. It is scheduled to be released in the United States in May 2014.

The official plot description is as follows:

August 30, 1975: the day fifteen-year-old Nola Kellergan is glimpsed fleeing through the woods, never to be heard from again; the day Somerset, New Hampshire, lost its innocence.

Thirty-three years later, Marcus Goldman, a successful young novelist, visits Somerset to see his mentor, Harry Quebert, one of the country’s most respected writers, and to find a cure for his writer’s block as his publisher’s deadline looms. But Marcus’s plans are violently upended when Harry is suddenly and sensationally implicated in the cold-case murder of Nola Kellergan—whom, he admits, he had an affair with. As the national media convicts Harry, Marcus launches his own investigation, following a trail of clues through his mentor’s books, the backwoods and isolated beaches of New Hampshire, and the hidden history of Somerset’s citizens and the man they hold most dear. To save Harry, his own writing career, and eventually even himself, Marcus must answer three questions, all of which are mysteriously connected: Who killed Nola Kellergan? What happened one misty morning in Somerset in the summer of 1975? And how do you write a book to save someone’s life?

Howard will also produce through his Imagine Entertainment alongside Brian Grazer. Eugenie Grandval and Claire Lundberg will also serve as producers with Alexandre Dauman and Erica Huggins executive producing and Racheline Benveniste and Jesse Ehrman overseeing for Warner Bros.

The New Title for the Third Hobbit Film is The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The-Hobbit-550x281

Peter Jackson has officially renamed the third and last “Hobbit” film. He has named the final installment The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

His statement follows:

Inside Information…

Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the “Desolation of Smaug”.

When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.

And so: “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” it is.

As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies.

Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you. It’s been a nice quiet time for us—Jabez and I happily editing away in a dark cave in Wellington—but those halcyon days are quickly coming to an end. It will soon be time to step into the light. Expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months.

And there’s also The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Cut, which we’re in the process of finishing, with over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore.

It’ll be a fun year!

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will hit 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters on December 17

True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga to Write and Direct The Black Count

books-black-count

According to a report from Deadline, Cary Fukunago, will write and direct the film adaptation of “The Black Count.” The film will be based on the novel of the same name written by Tom Reiss.

The plot is officially described as follows,

Here is the remarkable true story of the real Count of Monte Cristo – a stunning feat of historical sleuthing that brings to life the forgotten hero who inspired such classics as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.

The real-life protagonist of The Black Count, General Alex Dumas, is a man almost unknown today yet with a story that is strikingly familiar, because his son, the novelist Alexandre Dumas, used it to create some of the best loved heroes of literature.

Yet, hidden behind these swashbuckling adventures was an even more incredible secret: the real hero was the son of a black slave — who rose higher in the white world than any man of his race would before our own time.

Born in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), Alex Dumas was briefly sold into bondage but made his way to Paris where he was schooled as a sword-fighting member of the French aristocracy. Enlisting as a private, he rose to command armies at the height of the Revolution, in an audacious campaign across Europe and the Middle East – until he met an implacable enemy he could not defeat.

The Black Count is simultaneously a riveting adventure story, a lushly textured evocation of 18th-century France, and a window into the modern world’s first multi-racial society. But it is also a heartbreaking story of the enduring bonds of love between a father and son.

Fukunago is most known for his work on the hit HBO series, “True Detective” as well as the films Jane Eyre and Sin Nombre.

Mike Jackson, John Legend and Ty Stiklorius will produce alongside Fukunaga and Troy Carter. Josh Bratman will executive produce.
