Tom Cruise, Bill Paxton Eye ‘All You Need is Kill’

All You Need is Kill

The idea behind Groundhog Day is getting a violent, science fiction flavor, and stars Tom Cruise and Bill Paxton are involved. The new film coming from Warner Bros. is called All You Need is Kill.

If you are like me, that title probably made you roll your eyes, but once I heard the premise behind the upcoming action flick, I became more willing to make this project one to watch. You see, Doug Liman will direct All You Need is Kill, which is based on the graphic novel of the same name, written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka with illustrations by Yoshitoshi ABe. Liman was also behind The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Jumper, by the way.

The graphic novel tells the story of a soldier, whose part has been snagged by Cruise. He’s in a grueling war against an alien race. These aliens kill him, but due to a mysterious phenomenon, he wakes, only to re-live his final day over and over and over and…you get the idea. He’s in a time loop, and as this occurs, he becomes a more finely honed killer.

This was the same idea behind the short-lived series, Day Break, starring Taye Diggs. It’s definitely worth checking out if you are a Netflix subscriber. There was even an X-Files episode in Groundhog Day mode revolving around a bank heist.

Many entertainment news sources are marveling over the fact that Cruise and Bill Paxton have never shared the screen before. Their time has finally come.

Interestingly enough, the gorgeous, capable, and funny, Ms. Emily Blunt is already cast in All You Need is Kill. I suppose her casting is not so unusual, considering she already has The Wolfman and The Adjustment Bureau under her belt. She’s no stranger to science fiction, but I still thought it was a little strange when she was cast in this month’s release, Looper. She seems like more a polished person than would be the love interest of a hitman. I felt the same way when they cast Kate Beckinsale in Mark Wahlberg’s Contraband. Did you notice how they changed Beckinsale’s hair in that one to make her look a little more, shall we say low-income, married to an ex-smuggler type? I see a bit of the same going on in Looper.

You won’t hear any complaints from me, however. The more Blunt, the better! If you haven’t seen her in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, stop everything and go see it now. It’s a rare occasion when two actors convince me they are really in love and Blunt performs this feat with co-star Ewan McGregor.

Paxton is in final negotiations to play a really tough-as-nails leader to Cruise’s platoon. This sounds like a role with a bite and I’m sure he’ll sink his teeth right in.

Erwin Stoff, Tom Lassally and Jason Hoffs will produce via 3 Arts Entertainment. Dante Harper and Joby Harold are tackling the script. Production is scheduled for this fall in London.

Recently Paxton have been working on Two Guns for Universal and the History Channel miniseries Hatfields and McCoys, which just got him an Emmy nom. Congratulations are in order all around! You’ll be seeing Cruise in Jack Reacher this December. He was Stacee Jaxx in the Rock of Ages film. He has even more science fiction in the works as the star of Oblivion.

Emily Blunt Joins All You Need Is Kill Adaptation

Warner Bros. has chosen Emily Blunt to co-star with Tom Cruise in an adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka‘s 2004 sci-fi graphic novel All You Need Is Kill.

The story can be likened to Groundhog Day, but with a twist, according to Variety.com.

“A soldier in a war against aliens finds himself reliving his last day over and over after being killed,“ according to Variety.com. “Through the training and battles he experiences in these time loops, he becomes a better soldier.”

The official summary of the graphic novel is as follows:

There’s one thing worse than dying. It’s coming back to do it again and again… When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the Bitch of War. Is the Bitch the key to Keiji’s escape, or to his final death?

Blunt, who is most known for her role on The Adjustment Bureau as well as the upcoming film The Five Year Engagement, will be cast as another soldier, fighting alongside Cruise.

Doug Liman, whose credits include The Bourne Identity, as well as the rest of the Bourne trilogy, will be directing the film.

Though certainly similar to Groundhog Day, the plot of All You Need Is Kill sounds like it could make for an interesting movie. Big screen adaptations of graphic novels have been popular in recent years, as proven by The Walking Dead, whose second season finale received a record-breaking number of views.

Liman has a history of directing successful films, so Sakurazaka’s work is most likely in  good hands.

The film, dubbed “We Mortals Are,” is set to be released in 2013.

A New Trailer for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Ok, So I don’t partiularly like fishing in hardly any context… but I do like Ewan McGregor and he is as awesome as ever even in this film regarding fishing. CBS films recently released the new upcoming film, Salmon Fishing In The Yemen.

The film comes from Lasse Hallstrom and stars Emily Blunt, Ewan McGregor, Kristin Scott Thomas and Amr Waked.

It is an adaptation of the Paul Torday novel that was published in 2006. The official description is as follows:

Britain’s leading fisheries expert (McGregor) is approached by a consultant (Blunt) to help realize a sheikh’s (Waked) vision of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to the desert. He immediately thinks the project is both absurd and unachievable, but when the Prime Minister’s overzealous press secretary (Thomas) latches on to it as a “good will” story, this unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible.

The film hits theaters march 9th and you can watch the brand new trailer below:
