Sean Penn To Star In Film Adaptation of “Prone Gunman”

It was announced today that actor Sean Penn is set to star in an upcoming action movie franchise. Penn is currently in negotiations for the upcoming film adaptation of Prone Gunman, an action thriller being produced by Silver Pictures’ Joel Silver and Andrew Rona.

Prone Gunman is based on the novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette. The story centers on an international operative named Martin Terrier (Penn) who is betrayed by the organization he works for and must go on the run in a relentless game of cat-and-mouse across Europe.

Martin Terrier is a hired killer who wants out of the game—so he can settle down and marry his childhood sweetheart. After all, that’s why he took up this profession! But the Organization won’t let him go: they have other plans. Once again, the gunman must assume the prone shooting position. A tour de force, this violent tale shatters as many illusions about life and politics as bodies.

Manchette has been described as leftist French author, and his books — in the French noir genre — as an existentialist and involving explorations of politics as well as the human condition. Sound’s right up Penn’s alley who is most known for his high-profile roles such as gay politician in Milk to a lost soul in Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, as well as winning a pair of Oscars along the way.

Peter Travis is writing the script. StudioCanal is financing the project and is currently looking for a director to helm the adaptation.

There is no word of who else may be attached to the project or an anticipated release date.

Paddington Bear Movie Poster Revealed

Be prepared to see a lovable childhood character come to live in a brand new way. The first promotional poster for David Heyman’s big-screen adaptation of Michael Bond’s Paddington Bear has been released. The poster features Paddington standing on the platform at the Paddington train station in London, from which he takes his name.

Check out the poster here, and be sure to share your thoughts below.

Heyman, who produced the massively successful Harry Potter films, as well as  I Am Legend and Yes Man, has partnered with France’s StudioCanal to produce a live-action/CGI hybrid version of the British children’s series.

Paddington began in 1958 with the series’ first entry, “A Bear Called Paddington,” about a clever bear from Peru who is found at London’s Paddington train station and adopted by humans.

Paul King (The Mighty Boosh, Bunny and the Bull) will direct the film, so viewers may be in store for a particularly quirky experience. In a report from Empire Online, King assured Paddington enthusiasts that the new film will differ from Bond’s work only in style.

“There will be a mishap in the bath,” King said. “There will be hard stares, and he will be dressed correctly in a Peruvian bush hat and blue duffle coat.”

King also said there would be an origin story involved. I twas also reported that the film will not be an adaptation of an existing story, but “will draw inspiration from the whole series” and will feature a computer generated Paddington Bear interacting with a live-action environment.

The film, from Heyday Films and Warner Bros. Pictures,  is set to be released sometime in 2014. There is no word yet on who will star in the adaptation.

First Look at Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in Serena

The Hunger Games star, Jennifer Lawrence, has begun shooting her new project Serena in Prague. The film comes from 2929 and Studiocanal Productions, and she will star opposite of Bradley Cooper. Serena is based on on Rash’s acclaimed novel of the same name, which was a finalist for the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction.

We only have one photo from the adaptation, but frankly she looks gorgeous. I love the 1920’s look and she pulls off flawlessly.

The film follows newlyweds George (Cooper) and Serena Pemberton (Lawrence) who travel from Boston to the mountains of North Carolina where they begin to build a timber empire in 1929. Serena soon shows herself to be the equal of any man: overseeing crews, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving a man’s life in the wilderness. Together, this king and queen rule their dominion, killing or vanquishing all who stand in the way of their ambitions. But when Serena learns that she can never bear a child, she sets out to murder the woman who bore George a son before his marriage. And when she starts to suspect that George is protecting his illegitimate family, the Pembertons’ intense, passionate marriage begins to unravel as the story moves toward its shocking reckoning.

Serena is being directed by Susanne Bier with a screenplay from Christopher Kyle.

Along side Lawrence and Cooper, the film also features Toby Jones and Rhys Ifans.

We are very happy to be partnering with 2929 again,” said Olivier Courson, Chairman and CEO of Studiocanal. “Susanne Bier is a director we all greatly admire at Studiocanal, so to be able to finance and distribute her next film is a great pleasure for us. And like any filmgoer, we are very excited to see Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence together in this epic film.”

The film is produced by Ben Cosgrove, 2929 co-owners Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban, Chockstone Pictures’ Paula Mae Schwartz and Steve Schwartz, and Nick Wechsler via his Nick Wechsler Productions banner. Studiocanal co-financed the project with 2929 and is handling all foreign sales.
