Genius Joss Whedon Returning To Television With S.H.I.E.L.D

If you are a fan of directing genius, Joss Whedon, you are probably used to news stories about his shows getting cancelled but it seems that maybe networks are catching on to his large fanbase. ABC has ordered a pilot for “S.H.I.E.L.D.,” a live action television series from Whedon who must recently was the director/writer on Marvel’s The Avengers.

The project is based on Marvel’s peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D (which stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate or Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division) found in both the Marvel comic book and feature film universes, including the blockbuster 2012 movie The Avengers, in which S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury, recruits Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor to stop Thor’s adoptive brother Loki from subjugating Earth.

The series will be written by Whedon and his frequent partners in crime, brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Joss Whedon is also expected to direct the pilot episode.

“S.H.I.E.L.D.” will be the first live-action Marvel television series to get a greenlight from the networks and is expected to start immediately. The project had been in the works at Marvel TV and ABC Studios for quite a while before it was announced earlier this month by Disney CEO Bob Iger that it had signed an exclusive film and TV deal with Joss Whedon. The deal included him both writing and directing the The Avengers sequel and develop a live-action series for Marvel TV and ABC, both owned by Disney.

Whedon is most known for his amazingly ahead of their time shows such as Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse. Let’s all hope we can keep this show from getting cancelled, amiright?

Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Tancharoen executive produce with Jeffrey Bell and Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb.

The Walking Dead Casts Dallas Roberts In New Role

When fans think of the upcoming season 3 of “The Walking Dead,” they are most likely anticipating the introduction of new characters Michonne and the Governor. However, they aren’t the only new characters this season. AMC has announced that Dallas Roberts will be appearing as the character of Milton, one of the residents of Woodbury.

Robert Kirkman, comic book creator and series executive producer, explained,

“Milton is the details guy. He’s the guy that works with the Governor, who is monitoring all situations and is trying to help the Governor make sense of this world that they’re living in. He’s not exactly a scientist, but he’s a smart guy that is trying to find out how zombies behave. Watching him do his little experiments is going to be a lot of fun.”

According to the series showrunner, Glen Mazzara, fans will see Milton being not necessarily an imposing threat on the gang, but more of someone attempting to make themselves useful in a terrible situation.

“We were examining, ‘How do people survive in this apocalyptic world, and what can people contribute?’” says Mazzara. “And we didn’t think it was plausible that every single character we meet is an efficient zombie killer. We just didn’t buy that everyone we know would be active and deft enough to kill every walker. We wanted to show how other people survive, and Dallas has come in and helped us establish that character. He just adds a lot of heart and humanity to Woodbury, which further complicates what that is. That is a real town with real people and real survivors. It’s not necessarily a group of bad guys.”

The third season of “The Walking Dead” is set to premiere on October 14, 2012 and will feature 16 episodes.

Robert Kirkman Talks Differences Between Comic & Season 2 of the Walking Dead

Season 3 of the hit AMC series “The Walking Dead” is almost here and in the anticipation of Season 2 being unveiled on DVD and Blu-ray, the series creator Robert Kirkman spoke at length in featurettes about the process of adapting the comic series to television.

One specific featurette on the dvd release is called “The Ink Alive” in which Kirkman focuses specfically on the differences between the television series and the comic series.

::::Note: Spoilers Ahead::::

While the series may deviate heavily from the events of the comic series, the show tries to preserve specific key moments as well as the overall spirit of the story. Major plotline such as Hershel’s Farm in season 2 and the prison setting of season 3 are kept in tact while minor liberties are taken with the characters.

Robert Kirkman explains:

“There are things that happen in the comic that you absolutely have to put in the show, otherwise you’re not doing the comic justice. But maybe we move it up, maybe we move it back, we add different characters into the mix. We just do little adjustments to make it a little more compelling for the audience that is invested in the source material.”

Fans of both series’ may notice one of the biggest deviations is the storyline of Shane. Viewers of the show saw Shane die in a tragic way, however, in the comics, the event of his death is much different and takes place much earlier in the storyline than the show presents.

Kirkman explained that in the television series, he was able to delve into Shane’s descent into madness and his conflict with Rick.

“To have that extra little notch. That’s a cool byproduct of really smart writers being able to look at that material and go, ‘Hey good job Robert, now let’s do this.’”

However, keeping Shane alive longer also had a larger effect on the series as it resulted in new storylines and one of the biggest deviations between the series and the comics.

The death of Dale occurs much sooner in the television show much to the frustration of fans. In the comics, as Kirkman points out, Dale goes on to have a relationship with Andrea, but in the series, because Shane is still around and Dale is suspicious of Shane, Dale is snuffed out much earlier.

It was a moment in the series that upset fans immensely, but Kirkman thinks that fan enthusiasm is “cool.”

The first half of season 2 was dominated by the gang focusing on finding Sophia. Kirkman felt that the search and discovery of Sophia was important to several of the characters and wouldnt have had the writers change a thing.

“To not do that story simply because I didn’t think of it when I was writing the comic, or because I did the comic a little differently is absurd to me. Staying true to that stuff is great when it’s necessary, but there are so many great ideas thrown around in the writers’ room that you just have to do that stuff. And I think it makes the show that much better.”

Now, with season 3 almost here, Kirkman spoke about the major turning points of characters as the show moves to one of the most anticipated location of the comic series and the introduction of much loved characters Michonne and The Governor.

“The most important stories over the life of the comic book series start when they find that prison. Comic book fans know now we’re really getting to the good stuff. Now we’re going to see Michonne, we’re probably going to see the Governor, we’re going to see Woodbury, we’re going to see all of these different things that people know and love from the comic book and they know is on the horizon just some from seeing that image at the end of the second season.”

The Walking Dead season 3 premieres October 14, 2012 on AMC.

The Walking Dead Season 3 Photos

AMC’s massively popular series, “The Walking Dead,” is almost back with it’s third season and to tide us over till October, Entertainment Weekly posted new pictures featuring some of the new characters.

Season three also holds an interesting and dire conflict between Rick’s group and a new group of survivors lead by the Governor (David Morrissey).

The first photo is of the new character Michonne played by Danai Gurira and Andrea, played by Laurie Holden. As you can see, this is a production shot, as Michonne’s “pet” walker (Thesay West) is wearing blue-screen gloves so that he’ll appear armless in the final version.

The next photo released features Andrea (Holden) and the new character The Governor, played by David Morrissey.

The last photo released shows our group leader, Rick, played by Andrew Lincoln and Daryl, played by Norman Reedus. Frankly they look very unhappy and we can guess it has something to do with the new setting of Woodbury.

EW also has additional cast photos, and a look at the zombie transformations of some of the walkers, including what Michonne’s “pets” look like before and after their walker transformation (which includes losing their arms and jaws). Check that out here.

The Walking Dead Season 3 premieres October 14 on AMC.

Jim Carrey Sought For Role In Kick-Ass 2

Deadline recently reported that Universal Pictures is attempting to gain Jim Carrey for a new role in the upcoming sequel, Kick-ass 2. Carrey, who admitted to being a fan of Matthew Vaughn’s original film, would be playing the part of Colonel Stars, a military-themed superhero who founds the super-team Justice Forever.

While this is far from a sure thing, this could be the perfect next role for Carrey. If he signs on, Carrey will join Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, John Leguizamo, Donald Faison, Robert Emms, Yancy Butler and Morris Chestnut in the adaptation of the Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr. comic.

As for the film’s story, part of the plot will revolve around someone discovering the hero’s identity, with both Dave and Mindy possibly being found out.

Much of the storyline will also focus on Hit Girl and what happens to her after the events of the first movie. After her identity is released, she begins to be teased and bullied and given a less than classy nickname of “Captain Muffin-Muncher.” But don’t expect Hit Girl to cower in the face of the teasing. She is always ready to take charge in confrontation and self defense.

The sequel will be directed by Never Back Down helmer Jeff Wadlow and will feature a script by Vaughn.

A Majority of Walking Dead Players Try To Do The Right Thing

It seems The Walking Dead video game from Telltale games is proving to be just as much a social commentary as it is a captivating video game. Players are, as a majority, trying to do the right thing.

“Not even a zombie apocalypse can stop people from being intrinsically good,” said video game publisher and developer Telltale Games.

Similar to several popular games out right now, player choices are an important aspect of Telltale’s episodic adventure game. The game, based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, tasks players with making difficult (and morally ambiguous) decisions that affect the outcome of the story. However, according to new statistics revealed after the The Walking Dead Episode 2: Starved For Help was released, most people try to make the “right” choice even if it means endangering themselves or others.

(Warning: The rest of this article contains major spoilers for The Walking Dead)

87 percent of players, when faced with the crossbow-weildling woman, chose to wait rather than shoot her dead. The majority (85 percent of players) then decided to chop off high-school teacher David’s leg to save him from approaching walkers, and most also chose to spare the life of demented dairy farmer Andy St. John (80 percent of players).

Telltale Games senior director of marketing Richard Iggo analyzed these statistics and said,

“Some of the stats we’ve seen coming back from player decisions have created a perception that even in dire times – and when faced with no-win situations where each decision is morally grey – the majority of people will try to do the ‘right’ thing if they can, even if there’s really no ‘right’ decision to be made,” Iggo told GamesBeat. ”It’s fascinating because even when we offer players a decision where the apparently darker option might make sense from a purely logical point of view, they’ll often try to choose the ‘higher’ ground at personal cost even if that means being put in danger or having a relationship with another character suffer because of it.”

Iggo also noted that the game’s engines track every decision players make. Statistics for the larger story-changing choices are displayed at the end of each episode, while the video trailers offer a more in-depth look into smaller, more subtle choices that help shape series protagonist Lee Everett’s personality.

“One of my favorites is where we see people stop punching Andy St. John,” Iggo said. “If you’ve seen the trailer, you’ll know that we’re almost up to 1.5 million punches on Andy. In that scene, you wail away on him until you see a wide-angle shot of the other survivors watching you including the impressionable Clementine. The camera then cuts back to a first person perspective, and you can continue to strike, but what we see is that most people stop. They realize that they’re being watched and that people are forming an opinion of them right there, and most people don’t want to be seen as a monster even in light of what the St. John family did. Most people take the higher ground, get up, walk away, and leave Andy to his fate.”

One choice, that wasn’t covered in the statistics trailer, invovles a small moment early on in Episode 2. Players must pass out four pieces of food among ten very hungry survivors. Unsurprisingly, the children — Clementine and Duck — were the most picked, followed by Mark. But it’s the fourth pick, the hard-as-nails curmudgeon Larry, that most surprised Telltale.

Iggo had a theory on why players chose they way they did.

“People chose to feed the guy that had been nothing but trouble since they met him, but I guess they felt sorry for him or his daughter Lilly. Or maybe they hoped that, by feeding him, he might tone down his aggression towards them and perhaps not reveal to the group what he knows about [Lee’s] past,” said Iggo.

However, players will never know if their kindness mattered to Larry as he meets his maker at the end of Episode 2. And if thought that was shocking, you haven’t seen anything yet.

“In terms of absolute heartbreak in the episodes we’ve seen so far, [Episode 3: Long Road Ahead] takes the crown. You’re really going to have your morals tested right from the opening scenes of the episode, and since the bulk of people who play the game seem to make decisions based on what they would actually do in the situations presented to them, this episode is going to hold up a very dark mirror for a lot of people.”

Whether player’s good actions are a result of their naturally kind hearts or they’re desire as gamer’s to get the best ending possible, it is still nice to see that during the apocalypse we may have some kind survivors at least.

Concept Art Released For Cancelled “The Sandman” Project

One of the world’s most celebrated comics of the past 25 years, Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, has been on a long and tedious journey to the silver screen. However, the project has repeatedly fallen through much to chagrin of it’s devoted fans. Gaiman had originally pitched the project to studio executives only to have it not pan out with Warner bros.

The Sandman was published by DC Comics, however, beginning with issue #47, it was placed under the imprint Vertigo. It chronicles the adventures of Dream (of the Endless), who rules over the world of dreams. It ran for 75 issues from January 1989 until March 1996. Gaiman’s contract stipulated that the series would end when he left it.

For fans who are well acquainted with the Sandman world, they will notice that the concept art released from the failed project covers virtually the entire run of the comic. Fans can also now OWN the exclusive artwork as Gaiman himself tweeted a message regarding the cancelled project and concept art:

“Some years ago, I had to pitch/explain SANDMAN to Warners. Jill thompson illustrated the pitch. That art’s for sale.”

You can see some samples of the original art below:

New Walking Dead Season 3 Photo And An Update From Robert Kirkman

While fans await the premiere of season 3 of AMC’s hit series “The Walking Dead,” creator, Robert Kirkman has released a set photo as well as offered a short update for the newest season.

The series started out with a six-episode first season, which was followed by a thirteen-episode second season. And coming this fall, we’ll see the first eight episodes of what will go on to be a sixteen-episode third season. As of last week, production on the midseason finale has wrapped.

He recently tweeted,

We wrapped on the mid-season finale of @WalkingDead_AMC a few hours ago. Amazing work from all involved, this Georgia crew kicks ass!

Kirkman also shared the following photo, which gives us a look at the Woodbury welcome center.

Woodbury may seem like a welcoming safe haven for Rick and the gang, but anyone who knows whats in store for the crew, Woodbury is anything but. The band of survivors have a tough season ahead of them, between the walkers and the other’s still alive. This new season will also see the introduction of the highly anticipated character, The Governor.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC with new episodes October 14. Those looking for a way to pass the time between now and then might check out the Walking Dead Facebook game.

X-Men “Days Of Future Past” Heading To The Silver Screen

Seminal X-Men story arc “Days Of Future Past,” will receive the big screen treatment, says producer Bryan Singer. The film will be a sequel to 2011’s X-Men: First Class, and while Singer didn’t say how true to the comic book the movie would be, but he did mention that some very new things would also be dealt with.

“It’s going to be very ambitious,” Singer says.

Singer says the film is still being written right now and will start shooting in a few months. Matthews Vaughn will return as director. While Singer couldn’t confirm the possibility of appearances of characters from the first four X-Men films, he did say that there was a strong desire to broaden out the universe.

“The X-Men universe is every bit on its own as big as the Marvel universe,” he says. “I think it’s time to reach out and explore it, and perhaps even bring some connectivity between the films. So, you may see some of that.”

The story arc “Days Of Future Past” features writer/artist team Chris Claremont and John Byrne and ran through Uncanny X-Men #141 and 142 in 1981. It deals with a dystopian alternative future where mutants are hunted by Sentinels and kept in internment camps. It stars Kitty Pryde, who transfers her mind through time into the younger present-day Kitty, who turns to the X-Men to prevent the political assassination plot that triggered the events. (This reality has been designated as Earth-811, by the way.)

X-Men: Days Of Future Past is scheduled for a summer 2014 release

Guardians of the Galaxy To Get A Rewrite

It was recently announced that Chris McCoy has been tapped to rewrite Guardians of the Galaxy, a new space adventure movie from Marvel Studios. The film is part of Marvel’s second wave of movies, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, it is the only new title among the group. The rest are sequels featuring Iron Man, Thor and Captain America.

The Guardians of the Galaxy are a fictional superhero team that appear in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The Guardians first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy (vol. 2) #1 in May of 2008.

The comic series was published to wide acclaim. The May 2008 sales estimate for the first issue was 39,854 copies, making it the 61st top-selling comic title that month. The first and second issues sold out as well but were reprinted in a special collectors edition.

The film was officially announced at Comic-Con in July.

Though there have been multiple incarnations of the Guardians team in the comic series, the film’s team will include Dax the Destroyer, a human resurrected as a green warrior tasked with killing Thanos (the villain featured in the teaser scene at the end of The Avengers), Groot, a giant tree-man, Star-Lord, a gun-wielding alien-human hybrid and vigilante, Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered raccoon who uses explosives, and Gamora, the sole survivor of her species, saved by Thanos to be his assassin, but now fights against him.

Nicole Perlman, a graduate of Marvel’s former writing program, wrote the previous draft of the script, according to THR.
