Marvel’s Inhumans Coming to ABC in Fall of 2017

attends the 25th IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards co-sponsored by FIJI Water on November 30, 2015 in New York City.

When Marvel’s Inhumans the movie was cancelled during development, many fans were very disappointed. But fear not! Marvel announced in an interesting turn of events that they are now planning to keep the property but instead as a television series much like “Agents of SHIELD.”

In addition to changing the MCU Phase 4 movie into a new television series, Marvel announced earlier last week that the television series “Marvel’s Inhumans” will premiere on IMAX screens in Sept. 2017 before moving to ABC in it’s regular time slot. The first two episodes of the series will be shown on IMAX screens for two weeks before moving to ABC making this the first time a live-action series debuts this way.

“Inhumans” was originally created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1965. The series will follow the group of Inhumans, or super-humans with distinct and abnormal powers. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has already introduced the idea of Inhumans beginning in season 2. Whether the two shows overlap haven’t been revealed but it seems extremely likely. ABC currently airs the other popular MCU series, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..”

“This unprecedented alliance represents a bold, innovative approach to launching great TV content for a worldwide audience,” said co-chairman of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney/ABC Television Group Ben Sherwood in a statement. “It highlights Disney|ABC’s unrelenting commitment to finding new and creative ways to showcasing our very best programming and increasing global engagement and reach.”

IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond also added,

“This first-of-its-kind multi-platform production, distribution and marketing agreement brings together Marvel Television’s unique brand of entertainment, ABC’s unparalleled audience and IMAX’s brand and global fanboy demographic. It also takes our decades-long relationship with The Walt Disney Company to a whole new level, jointly breaking new ground in the industry. We are confident our exhibition partners will be excited to work with us on this innovative launch of a series across the IMAX network.”

Dan Buckley, President of Marvel Television, Publishing & Brand, added,

“We’re happy to see this unique deal come together, working with our partners.  In an ever-changing world of distribution and consumption, it’s very exciting to be part of a groundbreaking initiative that takes us to the forefront of this evolution.”

Five More Join the Cast of Marvel’s The Punisher

rs_punisher_series_coming_rab_02a

Marvel’s The Punisher is continuing to gain steam. The production is moving forward in New York City and last week Marvel Entertainment has announced the addition of five more to the show’s cast!

New additions to the highly anticipated spin off series include Daniel Webber (“11.22.63”) as Lewis Walcott, a young veteran who has had a difficult time re-assimilating into Civilian Society; Jason R. Moore (A Lonely Place for Dying) as Curtis Hoyle, a friend of Frank Castle’s and one of the few people who knows he is alive; Paul Schulze (“Nurse Jackie”) as Rawlins, a high-ranking member of the CIA whose operations in Afghanistan intersect with Frank Castle; Jaime Ray Newman (“Bates Motel”) plays Sarah Lieberman, Micro’s wife whose marriage has made her life far more complicated; and Michael Nathanson (Wolf of Wall Street) as Sam Stein, a Homeland agent who is challenged by his partnership with Dinah.

If you are a fan of the comics you might recognize some of those names. Two of the a five, Curtis Hoyle and Rawlins, are from the actual Punisher comics from Marvel with the other three being new creations for the series.

Jon Bernthal is set to reprise his role as Frank Castle from Marvel’s Daredevil where he gave one of the best performances of any Marvel series . He will be joined by newcomers Ben Barnes as Billy Russo (the civilian name of the villain Jigsaw), Frank’s Castle’s best friend from his days in the Special Forces who runs a successful private military corporation called “Anvil;” Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Micro, a former NSA analyst whose secrets may be of great value to Frank Castle and everyone around them; and Amber Rose Revah (Indian Summers, Son of God) as Dinah Madani; a highly-trained sophisticated Homeland Security agent who is vexed by the Punisher.

Executive Producer and showrunner Steve Lightfoot commented on the new casting saying,

“We couldn’t have asked for a more talented group of actors to round out the cast of Marvel’s The Punisher. It’s a thrill to watch them each bring their characters to life with such layered, nuanced performances.”

Executive Producer Jeph Loeb added,

“Marvel TV is very proud of the cast of The Punisher. Each actors brings a special promise who surround Jon Bernthal’s exceptional performance.”

The Punisher first appeared in the MCU in the second season of “Marvel’s Daredevil” on Netflix. This series is part of an overall deal between Marvel Television and Netflix, which has already released the critically-acclaimed seasons of Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Marvel’s Luke Cage, with Marvel’s Iron Fist coming on March 17, 2017. The heroes of these series will unite in the mini-series event Marvel’s The Defenders.

Executive produced by Steve Lightfoot, The Punisher spin-off series will premiere in 2017.

Marvel TV Characters Unlikely to Ever Appear in an MCU Film

defenderslogo2

If you are a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Marvel Television Universe then you might have noticed something interesting. The Netflix characters have YET to make an appearance in the MCU. They barely even get a halfhearted mention in the movies is any type of recognition. SHIELD and Agent Carter have lots of crossover with the movies but the Marvel Netflix has so far been treated like the Harry Potter of the Dursley family.

However, according to Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television, the television Marvel characters are unlikely to ever appear in one of Marvel’s films. He said,

I can tell you that part of the challenge of doing this sort of thing is that the movies are planned out years in advance of what it is that we are doing. Television moves at an incredible speed. The other part of the problem is that when you stop and think about it, if I’m shooting a television series and that’s going to go on over a six-month or eight-month period, how am I going to get Mike [Colter, Luke Cage] to be able to go be in a movie? I need Mike to be in a television show.

It is not completely impossible though, just very unlikely. Loeb adds that part of keeping the worlds mostly separate is that he wouldn’t want any potential crossover to be meaningless such as, “We never want to do Luke Cage gets into a cab as Foggy Nelson and Matt Murdock are getting out of the cab,” he said.

One small bit of good news for Netflix Marvel was hinted by Loeb. He mentioned that Rosario Dawson, who plays Nurse Claire Temple in Daredevil and Jessica Jones, is going to appear in, well, something. (She was recently announced to be appearing in “Luke Cage” and possibly “Iron Fist” as well. If this is the news he was hinting, I will be bummed. Put her in the movies!!!)

He said,

We have seen some characters that have appeared and crossed over. Most notably, one of our cast members that isn’t here because she’s working is Rosario Dawson, who continues the character of Claire Temple. So the short answer is we are already doing it. The long answer is as things go by, as the story dictates it, we’ve always been big fans of providing Easter eggs for our fans, but we never want to be known as an Easter egg farm. It has to work within the story.

jimleegreatest4

This week, FOX and Marvel officially announced their series order for a new X-Men TV series! Fox has done a put pilot commitment for a new Marvel action-adventure series with Matt Nix writing the pilot script while serving as an Executive Producer.

The X-Men series is currently, known as the Untitled Fox Marvel Project and will reportedly focus on two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

“Developing a Marvel property has been a top priority for the network–and we are so pleased with how Matt Nix has led us into this thrilling universe,” said Madden. “There’s comic book adventure, emotional and complicated relationships, and a rich, existing mythology from which to draw. With the brilliant production crew behind this project, it has all the makings of a big, fun and exciting new series.”

Jonathan Davis, President, Creative Affairs, 20th Century Fox Television added,

“Working with Marvel on a television series for FOX has been a professional dream for our head of development, Michael Thorn, and all of us at the studio. Matt, Lauren, Bryan, Simon, Jeph and Jim are a powerhouse team of creative artists, and we can’t wait to get started on what will easily be one of this development season’s most exciting new projects.”

Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television also commented,

“Marvel Television is thrilled to be co-producing with 20th Century Fox Television on our first project. Matt’s a huge fan of X-Men and his take on the X-Men universe, with its rich characters and high-stakes adventure, is exactly the show we want on FOX. It’s a great team of creative producers who will be making something entirely unique.”

The series will be produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Marvel Television, with 20th Century Fox handling physical production. The Untitled Fox Marvel Project is a co-production of 20th Century Fox Television and Marvel Television. Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb  and Jim Chory are serving as Executive Producers.

There is no anticipated production date yet.

New Jessica Jones Comic Series from Original Creators Coming This October

JessicaJonesDavidMack-thumb-600x926-481592

Marvel is knocking it out of the park with their Netflix additions to the MCU and “Jessica Jones” was seriously amazing. While we wait for the second season to premiere, the super heroine with a alcohol problem is returning to comics in a new Marvel series from original creators Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos, according to IGN.

Bendis said he did not want to premiere the comic series back in November with the series, rather, he wanted to wait until he could get the entire original team back together, including cover artist David Mack. Bendis told IGN:

Between [Michael’s art] and David Mack, who is one of my closest friends who did all the covers, that is the signature in which people think of her, of [Jessica Jones’] visuals. So having them all back together and having everyone be just a little bit better at their jobs — I think Michael is a better illustrator and David is a better painter — and I have to rise to the occasion and meet them.

In the comic book, we see Jessica where her comic, Alias, left off. Unlike her Netflix translation, this Jessica and long-time romantic partner Luke Cage have been raising their daughter, Danielle.

Having a child completely changes your perspective on everything, some in obvious ways and some in not-so-obvious ways. Some of them really sneak up on you. Like caring about somebody more than yourself, particularly when you’re very self-involved like Jessica would tend to be, is a big thing … So your perspective changes, and as an investigator and a detective her perspective will change because she’s a mother. I know some people are worried about that baby being dragged like a sack of potatoes that holds down the story or something, but I can think of many ways to tell the story celebrate this part of her life and at the same time complicates it to a degree that a lot of people can relate to. I think a lot of people can relate to trying to ‘do it all.’

Despite the current obstacles, in the Netflix world Jessica and Luke are not yet together though they will eventually end up finding their way back to each other.
