CBS Films Plans Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Adaptation

936full-scary-stories-to-tell-in-the-dark-cover

Prepare for a nostalgia bomb readers over 20. CBS Films has optioned the rights to the children’s book series, “Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark” written by Alvin Schwartz. You know, those horror anthologies we used to read late at night under the covers or at sleepovers? According to Deadline, the anthology series is being adapted into a film with Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton providing the screenplay. The Sean Daniel Company’s Jason Brown and Sean Daniel are set to produce Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark alongside 1212 Entertainment’s Elizabeth Grave.

“Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark” was originally published in 1981 and later became a three book series which included titles “More Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark” and “Scary Stories 3: More Tales To Chill Your Bones.”

This spooky addition to Alvin Schwartz’s popular books on American folklore is filled with tales of eerie horror and dark revenge that will make you jump with fright. There is a story here for everyone — skeletons with torn and tangled flesh who roam the earth; a ghost who takes revenge on her murderer; and a haunted house where every night a bloody head falls down the chimney. Stephen Gammell’s splendidly creepy drawings perfectly capture the mood of more than two dozen scary stories — and even scary songs — all just right for reading alone or for telling aloud in the dark. If You Dare!

The original (incredibly creepy) illustrations from Stephen Gammell were replaced with art by Brett Helquist for a recent 30th anniversary edition of the books. The switch led to some heavy criticism from fans who grew up with the original artists’s truly terrifying images.

There is no word yet on who will be directing the feature or what exactly the film will follow plot-wise. However, if any of the original art comes to life in the film, it will be truly terrifying.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has revealed a pretty amazing new IMAX one sheet poster that has intense detail while remaining eye-catching and gorgeous. You can see the poster above. The poster was inspired by the work of artist Kris Kuksi.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is almost here. The sequel film based on Suzanne Collins’ novel, Catching Fire, was produced and distributed by Lionsgate. Francis Lawrence is set to direct a screenplay from Simon Beaufoy and Michael Arndt. Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence returns as Katniss Everdeen along with Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones and Willow Shields also reprising their roles.

The supporting cast for Catching Fire includes Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, Lynn Cohen,Meta Golding, Amanda Plummer and Jeffrey Wright.

After winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games, Katniss returns home to District 12 along with fellow winner Peeta Shortly after returning home, they must embark on a “Victory Tour” of the districts, leaving behind their close friends and family again. On the day of the Victory Tour, President Snow (Sutherland) threatens Katniss’ best friend and pretend cousin, Gale Hawthorne, outraged after she and Peeta broke the rules of the 74th Hunger Games that allowed them both to win. During the tour, Katniss senses that a rebellion is brewing in the districts, but the Capitol is still firmly in control as Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games, known as a Quarter Quell, an event taken place every 25 years – a competition that could change Panem forever.

In this Hunger Games, the tributes will be reaped from the existing pool of victors, making all the other Games look like child’s play. As Peeta and Katniss end up in the arena again (as the only victors of District 12 with the exception of Haymitch), this time surrounded by experienced and vicious killers, President Snow is determined to eliminate them and destroy the rays of hope and the sparks of rebellions brewing up in the Districts. Now Katniss and Peeta must do whatever it takes to defeat their foes and come out on top once again and ignite the flames of rebellion in Panem.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is scheduled to be released in IMAX on November 22, 2013.

From “Easy Rider” to “The Terminator”: The Hottest Motorcycle Actors

GREAT ESCAPE, THE

Motorcycles remain the quintessential sign of the rebellious spirit — although they’re nowhere near their level of Hollywood glory from the 1960s and ’70s. However, a comeback just might be on the horizon! Fueled by films in which cool-talking dudes ride snazzy bikes while wearing sweet motorcycle helmets, the return to the motorcycle age offers excitement for enthusiasts of all ages. It also means a renewed interest in such classics as “The Great Escape” and “Easy Rider” — films perfect for inspiring and fostering that enduring motorcycle spirit.

Steve McQueen in “The Great Escape”

Steve McQueen’s motorcycle stint in “The Great Escape” is arguably the most iconic motorcycle jump in cinema history. First, the 1961 Triumph TR6 Trophy Bird had to undergo significant changes before it became an integral part of the film. Set in World War II Germany, the film would not have worked with a 1961 motorcycle. Instead, set designers painted it an unobtrusive gray to hide the anachronism — not that such efforts stopped McQueen’s biking antics from stealing the show! To be fair, McQueen didn’t actually take part in the iconic fence jump for which “The Great Escape” is still remembered. A stuntman stepped in for those honors, leaving McQueen the enviable task of riding a sweet bike in all the ‘easy’ scenes.

Arnold Schwarzenegger in “The Terminator”

Say what you want about Arnold Schwarzenegger, or rather, “Ah-nold,” you must admit he looks pretty snazzy on a motorcycle. In “The Terminator,” the beefcake movie star brought Austrian appeal to his Honda 750, with which he chased the adorable (but surprisingly effective) Honda Scooter carrying Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor. Later films included equally impressive bikes, such as the Indian Motorcycle from “Terminator 3.” According to USA Today, Schwarzenegger reunited with the beloved Indian Motorcycle during a 2010 visit to Simi Valley.

Marlon Brando in “The Wild One”

Bad boy Marlon Brando captured the hearts of millions of teens with his 1953 appearance in “The Wild One.” Although not necessarily his best film, photo stills from the movie continue to elicit female interest — both from Brando’s Triumph Thunderbird motorcycle and his soulful eyes. Enthusiasts at the Daily Mail claim that Marlon Brando and his Triumph Thunderbird are in the midst of a revival, posting record sales of 49,000 bikes in 2009 alone.

Peter Fonda in “Easy Rider”

No list of the hottest motorcycle stars is complete without Peter Fonda and his Captain America Harley-Davidson from the classic rebel film “Easy Rider.” Considered the ultimate motorcycle movie, “Easy Rider” set the standard for all later biker films. Although Jack Nicholson and Dennis Hopper also offered their acting expertise (and sweet bikes) to the effort, Peter Fonda proved most successful in raising heart rates. Sadly, according to KVUE ABC News, a 2010 fire destroyed Fonda’s iconic “Easy Rider” bike, along with a whole host of other vintage automobiles and motorcycles. Fortunately, Peter Fonda did not suffer the same fate.

Great Movies that Started as Books or Plays

read-book-see-film

You’ve probably never thought of Disney as a giant recycling company, but it’s one of the best in the entertainment business at taking old classic tales such as “Cinderella,” or books such as “101 Dalmatians,” and turning them into feature films. Its popular movies are then spun into television shows, Disney books and ice skating shows. A few, including “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” and now “Aladdin,” have also been recreated as Broadway musicals Continue reading
