AMC Says Netflix Boosted Walking Dead Ratings

Many television channels view timeshifting services as bad for business, but not AMC. The network reported sizable ratings boosts for “The Walking Dead” and “Mad Men” due in part, it says, to Netflix and other online streaming services.

Last year, Netflix purchased the exclusive rights to stream every back episode of AMC shows “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad,” and “The Walking Dead.”

According to DigitalTrends, AMC reported that its revenues were up about 40 percent in the first three months of 2012. Profits were up 20 percent thanks to strong ratings and performance of the new season “The Walking Dead.”

They haven’t been shy about vocalizing the role of Netflix in their ratings. Part of the reason for the network’s success, according to CEO Josh Sapan, was the working with Netflix and Amazon.

2012 got off to a strong start for AMC Networks, with double digit increases in net revenues, AOCF and operating income,” Sapan said. “Continued viewer enthusiasm for our programming resulted in ratings gains for our national networks, most notably AMC’s The Walking Dead, which ended its second season with nine million total viewers, an increase of 50 percent over last season’s finale. The series reigns as the highest-rated scripted drama in basic cable history in advertiser’s key demos. The fifth season of AMC’s Mad Men currently ranks as the most watched season ever of the series, outperforming the prior season by double-digits. These successes underscore the strength of our original programming strategy, which continues to drive audience and advertiser demand for our networks.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, Sapan later went into more detail during a conference call,

New viewers are finding these shows on a digital service, catching up on prior seasons and then tuning into AMC for new seasons in greater numbers, many for the first time.”

AMC isn’t without its problems though. Dish Networks, a satellite TV operator, has decided to drop the channel from its lineup.  Dish cited low ratings as the reason for the cut, but said it was the result of ongoing litigation between the two companies over its participation in Voom HD, a collection of HD channels that Dish decided to pick up, but dropped in 2008.

However, “The Walking Dead” continues to do extremely well on the channel. After premiering in October 2010, it has broken several ratings records and continues to be well received by critics and viewers. It has also received many award nominations, including a Writers Guild of America Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Television Series Drama. The series has also attained strong Nielsen ratings, beating various records for a cable series, including receiving 9 million viewers for its season two finale to become the most-watched basic cable drama telecast in history.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter Gets Life Once More

Neil Marshall, director of 2005’s claustrophobic nightmare The Descent, has signed on to direct the upcoming film The Last Voyage of the Demeter.  Millennium films will release the project which cycled through numerous directors before landing in Marshall’s hands.

According to Screenrant, Filmmakers such as Robert Schwentke (RED), Marcus Nispel (Conan the Barbarian), Stefan Ruzowitzky (Anatomy) and David Slade (Twilight: Eclipse) have all either circled or been briefly attached to direct the project at different points in time.

Though not a direct book adaptation, the story’s origins lie within the text of Bram Stoker’s 1897 classic Dracula. The Demeter was the ship that brought Dracula from Transylvania to London in Stoker’s book.  The damaged ship washed ashore in England with one survivor.

The film will follow the segment of the novel featuring the titular last voyage of the Demeter and the terror that occurs on board.

Within the novel, Dracula, the Russian ship, the Demeter, having weighed anchor at Varna, runs aground on the shores of Whitby, England, during a fierce tempest. All of the crew are missing and presumed dead, and only one body is found, that of the captain tied to the ship’s helm. The captain’s log is recovered and tells of strange events that had taken place during the ship’s journey. These events led to the gradual disappearance of the entire crew apparently owing to a malevolent presence on board the ill-fated ship. An animal described as a large dog is seen on the ship leaping ashore. The ship’s cargo is described as silver sand and boxes of “mould”, or earth, from Transylvania.

The film’s script was written a decade ago by Bragi Schut (Season of the Witch).

Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer and Bradley Fischer will be producing. The three have worked together on films before, such as Zodiac, Black Swan and Shutter Island.

The film was almost made last year by David Slade with a cast that included Ben Kingsley and Noomie Rapace, but when that was shut down the actors also left the project. It isn’t immediately known whether either cast member will return with the new project moving forward.

Little more information has been released about the indirect adaptation.

Lego Lord of the Rings Is On Its Way

Warner Bros. has confirmed that it will release a widely expected Lord of the Rings Lego videogame.

Packaging for Lego’s new line of LOTR toys, inspired by the three Peter Jackson movies based on the books, reveals the title is on the way. The news was announced last week and confirmed on the Lego Official Website.

In preparation for the game release, Lego will be releasing a new toy set based on the characters. The toy set based on the characters and upcoming game will be hitting stores Summer 2012.

Toy News predicted that Warner Bros. will officially unveil the new Lego game within the next few weeks, leading up to the E3 video games exhibition, and possibly at the show itself.

The game’s creation conveniently coincides with the upcoming release of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, coming to theaters Dec. 14.

The Lego video game series has done extremely well with hit titles such as the Lego Star Wars series, and Lego Batman. There have been four Lego Star Wars video games: Lego Star Wars: The Video Game (2005) Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (2006) Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (2007) Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (2011). As of February 13, 2009, Lego Star Wars: The Video Game has sold over 6.7 million copies worldwide, Lego Star Wars II has sold over 8.2 million, The Complete Saga has sold over 3.4 million, and the three combined have sold over 20 million.

With the game sets, and the film coming out this year, the Lego LOTR video game will most likely do very well commercially. It also seems the Lego video games have a stable fan base that are anticipating this new release.

Big Screen Adaptation of 39 Clues Series In The Works

Shawn Levy (Date Night, Night at the Museum) is working on a deal to direct the big-screen adaptation of The 39 Clues, the 11-volume novel series Scholastic Media began publishing in 2008.

Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can) wrote the script and Spielberg and Scholastic’s Deborah Forte are producing. Originaly Brett Ratner was attached to direct the film adaptation, but he later dropped out and was replaced by Levy.

According to Deadline, DreamWorks purchased the film rights to the book before it was published, intending for Steven Spielberg to direct.

More than a typical novel, The 39 Clues includes cards and an online game that gives clues to a mystery. Readers who solve the mystery can win a cash prize.

The story is about the Cahills, whose relatives include the likes of Houdini and Napoleon. The movie is framed as an epic family adventure about two ordinary kids who discover that they are part of the world’s most powerful family sets them off on a globe-trotting treasure hunt.

The book’s official plot synopsis follows:

Minutes before she died Grace Cahill changed her will, leaving her decendants an impossible decision: “You have a choice – one million dollars or a clue.”

Grace is the last matriarch of the Cahills, the world’s most powerful family. Everyone from Napoleon to Houdini is related to the Cahills, yet the source of the family power is lost. 39 clues hidden around the world will reveal the family’s secret, but no one has been able to assemble them. Now the clues race is on, and young Amy and Dan must decide what’s important: hunting clues or uncovering what REALLY happened to their parents.

The 39 Clues is Scholastic’s groundbreaking new series, spanning10 adrenaline-charged books, 350 trading cards, and an online game where readers play a part in the story and compete for over $100,000 in prizes.”

The 39 Clues books set the story, and the cards, website and game allow kids to participate in it. Kids visit the website – the39clues.com – and discover they are also lost members of the Cahill family. They then set up online accounts where they can compete against other kids and against Cahill characters to find all 39 clues.

Through the website, kids can track their points and clues, manage their card collections, dig through the Cahill archives for secrets, and “travel” the world to collect Cahill artifacts, interview characters, and hunt down clues. Collecting cards helps: Each card is a piece of evidence containing information on a Cahill, a clue, or a family secret.

Sacha Baron Cohen To Star As Freddie Mercury

It has been announced that comedic actor, Sacha Baron Cohen will star as Freddie Mercury in an upcoming biopic. The film has been in the works for quite some time, according to Collider.com. There have been several biographies written about Mercury and his time in Queen, but this will be one of the first film biopics specifically about Mercury.

Stephen Frears (The Queen, High Fidelity) is the frontrunner to direct the project, according to Variety.com, although negotiations have not yet begun.

Collider also reported that Cohen may actually be singing Queen songs in the film. He did his own singing for his part in Tim Burton’s 2007 musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

The plot of the biopic will follow Queen’s formation up through their appearance at Live Aid in 1985. Mercury’s battle with AIDS and death in 1991 will not be featured in the film.

Frears is currently busy directing the HBO drama Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight, but he has confirmed he will have a relatively open schedule for the near future. Peter Morgan (The Queen) wrote the most recent version of the script.

Producers for the film have already purchased the rights for parts of Queens catalog, including “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.”

Cohen, best known as a comedic actor for films such as Borat, Bruno, and his newest film, The Dictator, bears a definite resemblance to the classic rock frontman. The question, however, is whether Cohen can master Mercury’s wide vocal range.

Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman, Producer Talks Season 3

AMC began production on season three of “The Walking Dead” Monday, and Executive Producer Robert Kirkman did an on-set interview with AMCtv.com to discuss his thoughts and expectations for the upcoming 16 episodes.

According to Kirkman, Season three will see several changes, some of which were teased in season two’s finale such as that the group will at last depart from Herschel’s farm after it is overrun by walkers and that they will arrive at a seemingly abandoned prison, where a numerous plot twists unfold.

When it comes to the prison, Kirkman said he is very excited for fans to see the prison set.

They’ve taken a lot of what you see in the comic book series and brought it to life in ways that I didn’t think possible,” he said. “This is going to be one of the most impressive looking things that’s ever been put together for a show.”

Season 3 will also see the addition of new characters such as the sinister Governor (David Morrissey), whose actions suggest humans may pose more of a threat than the undead.

The plan was always to evolve naturally into a place where the zombies essentially become a manageable threat,” Kirkman said. “You know the rules. You know how to deal with them. To a certain extent they become something to not really be scared of unless you mess up. Humans, however, do not follow any rules and will always do something that surprises you and are capable of doing things far worse than trying to eat you…We’re definitely going to be seeing a lot of horrible things.”

Along with the Governor, fan-favorite zombie slicer Michonne, played by Danai Gurira, will also be joining the cast.

Kirkman explained he was impressed with the sword skills she is picking up in training.

She’s going to be doing all of the hard character stuff and drama that The Walking Dead is known for, but she has tremendous physical capability and the sword training that I’ve seen is absolutely amazing,” he said. “I can’t wait to see her hack up some zombies.”

Season 3 will have 16 episodes, making it the show’s longest season yet. With the extra time, Kirkman said he looks forward to packing in as much character development and action as possible.

The actors and the crew and a lot of the producers would not be thrilled to hear me saying this, but I love doing 16 episodes a year,” he said. “I think the more the better, and I think it’s a lot of fun. We are going to get to tell bigger stories, and tell more stories, and get into the characters a lot more. So the more the merrier.”

AMC wisely had renewed “The Walking Dead” for it’s third season on October 25th, 2011 after the season 2 premiere broke cable ratings records. Actual filming for season 3 is scheduled to begin shooting in another area, Senoia, on May 31, 2012.

The Monkey Wrench Gang Finds New Life On The Big Screen

Edward Abbey’s 1975 environmentalist novel The Monkey Wrench Gang is headed for the silver screen.  Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who worked on the 2010 Sundance Film Festival documentary Catfish and Paranormal Activity 3, will write and direct the adaptation.

Edward R. Pressman (American Psycho) and Grammy-winning album cover artist Gary Burden are producing.

The producers have been discussing ideas for the film for about 15 years, but now feel they have the right filmmakers to move ahead in the project, according to Deadline.com.

The novel is about a group of four men who are protesting industrial development in the 1970s American West. Their method of protest consists of attempts to damage industrial equipment without ever harming humans, animals, plants or rocks. The plan is followed, with the exception of one member, a Vietnam veteran named Hayduke, who wants to blow things up.

We’re excited and honored to turn this book into a movie,” Joost and Schulman said in a release on Deadline.com. “People often ask us why we work together, and as Edward Abbey used to say, ‘One man alone can be pretty dumb sometimes, but for real bona fide stupidity, there ain’t nothin’ can beat teamwork.’”

Pressman said he feels the duo will do a good job with the comedic nature of the book, according to the same release.

Henry and Ariel’s approach to the film adaptation will connect to the humor and cultural zeitgeist of today in the same way Abbey’s book does,” Pressman said. “I’m delighted to collaborate with them on this irreverent comedy.”

See the official plot synopsis below:

Ed Abbey called The Monkey Wrench Gang, his 1975 novel, a “comic extravaganza.” Some readers have remarked that the book is more a comic book than a real novel, and it’s true that reading this incendiary call to protect the American wilderness requires more than a little of the old willing suspension of disbelief. The story centers on Vietnam veteran George Washington Hayduke III, who returns to the desert to find his beloved canyons and rivers threatened by industrial development. On a rafting trip down the Colorado River, Hayduke joins forces with feminist saboteur Bonnie Abbzug, wilderness guide Seldom Seen Smith, and billboard torcher Doc Sarvis, M.D., and together they wander off to wage war on the big yellow machines, on dam builders and road builders and strip miners. As they do, his characters voice Abbey’s concerns about wilderness preservation (“Hell of a place to lose a cow,” Smith thinks to himself while roaming through the canyonlands of southern Utah. “Hell of a place to lose your heart. Hell of a place… to lose. Period”). Moving from one improbable situation to the next, packing more adventure into the space of a few weeks than most real people do in a lifetime, the motley gang puts fear into the hearts of their enemies, laughing all the while. It’s comic, yes, and required reading for anyone who has come to love the desert.”

There is no word yet on when this adaptation is predicted to be released.
