Oprah Winfrey Boards A Wrinkle in Time

A_wrinkle_in_time_digest_2007

The upcoming big screen adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time has today found its first star. According to Variety, Oprah Winfrey has joined the cast in the role of Mrs. Which. Mrs. Which is one of three immortal women who appear in “A Wrinkle in Time.” The others include Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who.

Director Ava DuVernay is helming the project which teams her back up with Winfrey who worked with her on Selma.

“A Wrinkle in Time” was published in 1962 and is described on L’Engle’s official site as is follows:

Meg Murry, her little brother Charles Wallace, and their mother are having a midnight snack on a dark and stormy night when an unearthly stranger appears at their door. She claims to have been blown off course, and goes on to tell them that there is such a thing as a tesseract, which, if you didn’t know, is a wrinkle in time.

Meg’s father had been experimenting with time-travel when he suddenly disappeared. Will Meg, Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin outwit the forces of evil as they search through space for their father?

Jennifer Lee is adapting the book into a screenplay, with Jim Whitaker and Catherine Hand producing. “A Wrinkle in Time” marks the first title in L’Engle’s four-book Time Quartet series, which also includes “A Wind in the Door,” “A Swiftly Tilting Planet” and “Many Waters.” L’Engle’s 1989 novel, “An Acceptable Time,” was also marketed as part of the series but took place a generation earlier.

Marvel TV Characters Unlikely to Ever Appear in an MCU Film

defenderslogo2

If you are a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Marvel Television Universe then you might have noticed something interesting. The Netflix characters have YET to make an appearance in the MCU. They barely even get a halfhearted mention in the movies is any type of recognition. SHIELD and Agent Carter have lots of crossover with the movies but the Marvel Netflix has so far been treated like the Harry Potter of the Dursley family.

However, according to Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television, the television Marvel characters are unlikely to ever appear in one of Marvel’s films. He said,

I can tell you that part of the challenge of doing this sort of thing is that the movies are planned out years in advance of what it is that we are doing. Television moves at an incredible speed. The other part of the problem is that when you stop and think about it, if I’m shooting a television series and that’s going to go on over a six-month or eight-month period, how am I going to get Mike [Colter, Luke Cage] to be able to go be in a movie? I need Mike to be in a television show.

It is not completely impossible though, just very unlikely. Loeb adds that part of keeping the worlds mostly separate is that he wouldn’t want any potential crossover to be meaningless such as, “We never want to do Luke Cage gets into a cab as Foggy Nelson and Matt Murdock are getting out of the cab,” he said.

One small bit of good news for Netflix Marvel was hinted by Loeb. He mentioned that Rosario Dawson, who plays Nurse Claire Temple in Daredevil and Jessica Jones, is going to appear in, well, something. (She was recently announced to be appearing in “Luke Cage” and possibly “Iron Fist” as well. If this is the news he was hinting, I will be bummed. Put her in the movies!!!)

He said,

We have seen some characters that have appeared and crossed over. Most notably, one of our cast members that isn’t here because she’s working is Rosario Dawson, who continues the character of Claire Temple. So the short answer is we are already doing it. The long answer is as things go by, as the story dictates it, we’ve always been big fans of providing Easter eggs for our fans, but we never want to be known as an Easter egg farm. It has to work within the story.

Game of Thrones Season 7 to Premiere in Summer 2017

It was previously reported that “Game of Thrones” would have a delayed production schedule because, you know, winter has finally come. It was speculated that this would mean a later premiere date and that has now been confirmed.

It was just announced by Casey Bloys, president, HBO programming, that the seventh season has a debut slated for summer 2017 on HBO.

It was also revealed that production will take place in Northern Ireland to get the wintery scenes, while additional portions will be filmed in Spain and Iceland. Locations for shooting in Spain will include Sevilla, Caceres, Almodovar del Rio, Santiponce, Zumaia and Bermeo.

There is no date yet for the summer premiere but it should be announced soon.

“Now that winter has arrived on ‘Game of Thrones,’ executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss felt that the storylines of the next season would be better served by starting production a little later than usual, when the weather is changing,” said Bloys. “Instead of the show’s traditional spring debut, we’re moving the debut to summer to accommodate the shooting schedule.”

Last week, Game of Thrones received 23 Primetime Emmy nominations, the most of any nominee for the third year in a row. This year’s nominations include Outstanding Drama Series, 2 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington), 3 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Maisie Williams), Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Max von Sydow), 2 for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Miguel Sapochnik, Jack Bender) and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series (David Benioff and D.B. Weiss).

Production on the Next Season of Game of Thrones Delayed

game-of-thrones-season-6-dany-600x337

The return of “Game of Thrones” has been delayed unfortunately. The series, which usually premieres every year around March/April, has been pushed back due to production being delayed. But there is a pretty good reason at least.

Executive producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss revealed in a podcast that filming of season seven will not begin in July, as it normally does. The problem is from a lack of winter weather and since winter has come, production needs some wintery sets, Weiss explained:

We’re starting a little bit later because, at the end of this season, winter is here, and that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes any more. We kind of pushed everything down the line so we could get some grim, gray weather, even in the sunnier places that we shoot.

The showrunners did not let on as to when production will begin.

It was also revealed a few weeks ago that the end of the series is closer than anyone wants. The plan is to wrap it up with 13 more episodes spread over two more seasons.

There is no official word from HBO on whether this production delay will affect the season seven premiere air date but it seems likely with a delayed production schedule.

jimleegreatest4

New Jessica Jones Comic Series from Original Creators Coming This October

JessicaJonesDavidMack-thumb-600x926-481592

Marvel is knocking it out of the park with their Netflix additions to the MCU and “Jessica Jones” was seriously amazing. While we wait for the second season to premiere, the super heroine with a alcohol problem is returning to comics in a new Marvel series from original creators Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos, according to IGN.

Bendis said he did not want to premiere the comic series back in November with the series, rather, he wanted to wait until he could get the entire original team back together, including cover artist David Mack. Bendis told IGN:

Between [Michael’s art] and David Mack, who is one of my closest friends who did all the covers, that is the signature in which people think of her, of [Jessica Jones’] visuals. So having them all back together and having everyone be just a little bit better at their jobs — I think Michael is a better illustrator and David is a better painter — and I have to rise to the occasion and meet them.

In the comic book, we see Jessica where her comic, Alias, left off. Unlike her Netflix translation, this Jessica and long-time romantic partner Luke Cage have been raising their daughter, Danielle.

Having a child completely changes your perspective on everything, some in obvious ways and some in not-so-obvious ways. Some of them really sneak up on you. Like caring about somebody more than yourself, particularly when you’re very self-involved like Jessica would tend to be, is a big thing … So your perspective changes, and as an investigator and a detective her perspective will change because she’s a mother. I know some people are worried about that baby being dragged like a sack of potatoes that holds down the story or something, but I can think of many ways to tell the story celebrate this part of her life and at the same time complicates it to a degree that a lot of people can relate to. I think a lot of people can relate to trying to ‘do it all.’

Despite the current obstacles, in the Netflix world Jessica and Luke are not yet together though they will eventually end up finding their way back to each other.

Preacher is Getting a Longer Second Season

Preacher-Dominic-Cooper-as-Jesse-Custer1

AMC has officially announced that their newest hit series, “Preacher,” will have a longer second season! Season two will have 13 episodes rather than 10. The show is currently only halfway into its 10-episode first season.

“Preacher” is based on the graphic novel series written by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. The television adaptation was developed by stoner-comedy buds Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, along with writer Sam Catlin.

Fulfilling a promise to his deceased father, one-time outlaw Jesse Custer returns home to West Texas to take over his dad’s church. Jesse’s mission, however, becomes twisted when his body is overcome by a cryptic force that unleashes within him a highly unconventional power. Together with hell-raising ex-girlfriend Tulip and Irish vagabond Cassidy, the preacher-in-training embarks on a journey to find God in a world inhabited by holy, hellish, and everything-in-between characters.

According to a release from the network, the show is “currently averaging 3.3 million viewers per episode” and is the number-two series on cable among adults ages 18-49 and 25-54.

“What Sam, Seth, Evan and the entire creative team have achieved in bringing Garth Ennis’ graphic novel to the screen is extraordinary,” said AMC president Charlie Collier. “We look forward to more time with these unforgettable characters be it in Heaven, Hell, Texas or beyond.”

Game of Thrones Season Finale Gets Record-High Ratings

game-of-thrones-season-6-dany-600x337

Not sure if this is surprising to ANYONE but the sixth season finale of “Game of Thrones” has a record high of viewers and received the show’s highest ratings for a single episode.

The extra long finale episode which clocked in at 69-minutes, reached 8.9 million people, breaking its season five finale record of 8.1 million people, according to Nielsen. Among viewers between the ages of 18 and 49, the episode scored a 4.4 rating, higher than any other Game of Thrones episode. The show has been drawing around 23.3 million viewers each week, up 15 percent from last year, reports USA Today.

Unfortunately, there is bad news. According to showrunners Game of Thrones will wrap up after two more seasons both of which will be shorter seasons of about 7 episodes each rather than the standard 10. Showrunners have said there are max 15 episodes left in the series total.
