“Preacher” Adaptation To Become AMC Series?

preacher

It has been an unfortunately long journey for the television adaptation of the comic book series, “Preacher.” And the saga continues. The comic, which was created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, is reportedly heading to AMC and may already have a pilot order.

“Preacher” tells the story of a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon. Given immense powers, the preacher, teamed with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire, set out on a journey across America to find God — who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven — and hold him accountable for his negligence.

Development for a “Preacher” adaptation has been rocky and unstable. Originally it was going to be made into a HBO series but after four years in development it was dropped. DJ Caruso was previously attached to direct when the project was in development to become a film, but that was also apparently dropped. Whether Caruso is still attached is unknown.

AMC has not confirmed the project though given how popular their other comic book based series are doing on the network, it is not impossible to assume they have a hand in the highly anticipated project.

No names have been confirmed for the project but the site, Badass Digest, reports that the ones attached are “big and impressive.” However, Seth Rogan took to Twitter after the story broke to say this:

“Arseface. John Wayne, The Saint of Killers.”

These are three main characters from “Preacher.” So how is Rogen involved with this attempt to bring the Vertigo comic to television. His role in the project remains unconfirmed.

IDW and Michael Chiklis Developing TV Series Based on Comic Book Pantheon

According to a report from Deadline, IDW Entertainment is planning on adapting a comic book from Michael Chiklis for television. The show will be based on the comic series called “Pantheon” which was originally created by Chiklis, Anny Simon Beck and Marc Andreyko and published in 2010.

The series pits Zeus’s fellow gods against the Titans in an epic battle of good versus evil, and father versus son. Breaking the golden rule of Greek mythology – to never reveal themselves – the gods Zeus, Aphrodite, Pandora, Cronus, Prometheus and Jason return to their timeless battles, as Armageddon nears.

“Pantheon” will be developed internally at IDW with Circle of Confusion co-producing and overseeing packaging and creative. The two companies will then shop the project around to networks, but for now the search is on for a showrunner to co-create the series along with Chiklis.

The television adaptation of “Pantheon” joins fellow greek-myth-based-comic book “Headache” on the small screen. Fox is developing Lisa Joy’s graphic novel as a drama titled “Athena.”

There is currently no word on who is being eyed for the lead roles in the adaptation or an anticipated premiere date. Those decisions will like be made after a network decides to pick up the project and green light a pilot episode.

I am so overly excited for this. FX has ordered a 13-episode season for Guillermo del Toro’s “The Strain.” “The Strain” is based on a vampire novel trilogy of the same name penned by del Toro and Chuck Hogan. Del Toro and Hogan co-wrote the pilot for the TV project, with del Toro also helming.

“The Strain” is billed as a high concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City.  He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism.  As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

“‘The Strain’ books are near and dear to my heart and now, Chuck and I have the blessing of a partnership with Carlton and FX that holds great promise,” said del Toro.  “Working with FX has yielded an amazing experience with total creative freedom and support.”

Carlton Cuse is serving as showrunner and scribe on the series, which is being produced by FX Prods. Corey Stoll (who recently starred in “House of Cards”) is headlining the series as Goodweather. Other cast members include Mia Maestro, Sean Astin and Kevin Durand. “The Strain” will begin lensing in Toronto later this month.

“The Strain” will premiere in 2014.

According to a report from TV Guide, Katrina Law, most known for her role in “Spartacus,” is heading to The CW for the role of Nyssa al Ghul in “Arrow.” Nyssa is the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul and half-sister of Talia. In the series, Nyssa will be a member of the League of Assassins where she will make her way to Starling City to face off against Caity Lotz’s Black Canary. In the show, her last name will be al Ghul rather than Raatko.

Law joins several new additions in the new season of “Arrow” including Summer Glau as Isabel Rochev, Caity Lotz as Black Canary, Michael Jai White as Bronze Tiger, Kevin Alejandro as Sebastian Blood, Bex Taylor-Klaus as Sin, Dylan Neal as Dr. Anthony Ivo and Grant Gustin as Barry Allen/The Flash.

“Arrow” was developed by writer/producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg. The series follows billionaire playboy Oliver Queen, portrayed by Stephen Amell, who, after five years of being stranded on a hostile island, returns home to fight crime and corruption as a secret vigilante whose weapon of choice is a bow and arrows. Unlike in the comic books, Oliver does not go by the alias “Green Arrow” in the television series. The second season of the show premiered on October 9, 2013

“Arrow” airs Wednesdays at 8 P.M. ET/PT on The CW.

The CW’s “The Flash” Will Now Receive Traditional Pilot

Since the incredible success of “Arrow,” The CW has decided to continue their foray into superhero TV with The Flash. The announcement of the new series was revealed a few months ago but it was originally planned to begin as a “backdoor pilot” on their hit series “Arrow,” where actor Grant Gustin would appear as Barry Allen before spinning off into his own TV series. However, Deadline is reporting that The Flash will now be getting a traditional pilot rather than becoming a spin-off.

“Arrow” creators Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg along with Geoff Johns are still signed on to write the pilot episode while pilot director David Nutter remains at the helm. Gustin will first appear as Barry Allen in the eighth episode of “Arrow” which is titled “The Scientist.” Set to air December 4th, the episode is described as follows:

“A seemingly impossible robbery at Queen Consolidated’s Applied Sciences Division brings Central City police scientist Barry Allen (guest star Grant Gustin) to town.  Citing a similar case back home, Barry offers to help Oliver and team with the investigation.  Oliver senses there is more to Barry than meets the eye, but he’s distracted by the similarities between this current case and something that happened on the island.  Meanwhile, Felicity takes a liking to Barry, which doesn’t go unnoticed by Oliver.  Sin (guest star Bex Taylor-Klaus) asks Roy for help when a friend of hers goes missing.  Roy is surprised when Thea not only encourages him to help, but joins the search.  Unfortunately, Sin’s friend is connected to Brother Blood (guest star Kevin Alejandro), and their search ultimately gets one of them seriously injured.”

No word about when the series will air but it is rumored to be planned with a midseason premiere.

Cinemax Developing Series Based on Robert Kirkman’s Outcast

Cinemax has officially confirmed that they are adapting Robert Kirkman’s upcoming comic series “Outcast” as a television drama. Kirkman will serve as Executive Producer alongside David Alpert of Circle of Confusion. The comic series is set to debut in 2014 and will be written by Kirkman and drawn by Paul Azaceta.

The series follows Kyle Barnes, a young man who has been plagued by possession since he was a child. Now an adult, he embarks on a journey to find answers but what he uncovers could mean the end of life on Earth as we know it.

Creator Robert Kirkman said,

“Despite the success of The Walking Dead, Outcast is only my second foray into the horror genre. I think Kyle Barnes is every bit as compelling as Rick Grimes and demonic possession is way scarier than zombies–so this is going to be fun. Starting a new project is like setting off on a long journey and I couldn’t ask for better travel companions than David Alpert and Sharon Tal Yguado and I’m thrilled to be a part of what Cinemax has planned for the next few years.”

Sharon Tal Yguado, Executive Vice President of Original Development and Scripted Programming at FIC, also added,

“At FIC, we’re committed to creating compelling, innovative television with A-List writers like Robert Kirkman, and with Cinemax we have a partner that is as passionate as we are about this very unique project. Outcast is unlike anything on television and has the potential to become another global phenomenon.”

There is no word yet on when the series will make its way to the small screen or who the network is looking at to headline the project.

Syfy Plans Beowulf Series

The SyFy Channel has announced plans to adapt the epic poem, “Beowulf,” into a new series, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.

“Beowulf”  is an Old English heroic epic poem consisting of 3182 alliterative long lines, set in Scandinavia, commonly cited as one of the most important works of Anglo-Saxon literature. It survives in a single manuscript known as the Nowell Codex. Its composition by an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet is dated between the 8th and the early 11th century. The poem’s existence for its first seven centuries or so made no impression on writers and scholars, and besides a brief mention in a 1705 catalogue by Humfrey Wanley it was not studied until the end of the eighteenth century, and not published in its entirety until the 1815 edition prepared by the Icelandic-Danish scholar Grímur Jónsson Thorkelin.

In the poem, Beowulf, a hero of the Geats in Scandinavia, comes to the help of Hroðgar, the king of the Danes, whose mead hall (in Heorot) has been under attack by a monster known as Grendel. After Beowulf slays him, Grendel’s mother attacks the hall and is then also defeated. Victorious, Beowulf goes home to Geatland in Sweden and later becomes king of the Geats. After a period of fifty years has passed, Beowulf defeats a dragon, but is fatally wounded in the battle. After his death, his attendants bury him in a tumulus, a burial mound, in Geatland.

“Beowulf” has previously been adapted to the big and small screen several times. Most notably was the motion capture film adaptation in 2007 that was directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Matt Greenberg is attached to write the project. The new “Beowulf” series will be executive produced by Michael Chechik, Andrew Cosby, Paulo de Oliveria, Matt Greenberg and Brian Hamilton. There is currently no word on who is being looked at to star in the series or a projected premiere date.

Melissa Rosenberg to Write Marvel Studios’ Jessica Jones

marvel-studios-logo2

Deadline is reporting that Melissa Rosenberg, most known for screenwriting The Twilight Saga, will be in charge of writing the upcoming Marvel Studios adaptation of “Jessica Jones.” The female superhero first made an appearance in 2001’s Marvel MAX title “Alias.” Retroactively a former Avenger, Jones left the superhero life behind to run Alias Private Investigations. Although “Alias” ended after just 28 issues, Jones has since become a major character in the Marvel Universe.

The series will premiere on Netflix alongside “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist.” All four will build to a crossover miniseries titled, “The Defenders.” Each series is designed to take Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and the culminating mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.

Rosenberg will serve as both writer and executive producer on “Jessica Jones,” which is expected to be the second show to premiere, following “Daredevil.” Drew Goddard was also announced to be taking over the “Daredevil” series adaptation.

There is no word yet on who is being looked at to star in the project or an anticipated release date. Also whether or not the series will tie in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe is unconfirmed.

AMC Renews The Walking Dead for a Fifth Season

walkingdeadcomicconbannersmall

As if it wasn’t already going to happen, AMC has officially renewed “The Walking Dead” for a fifth season. The news comes just a few weeks into the fourth season which premiered earlier this month.

Charlie Collier, AMC president said,

“We are very happy to make what has to be one of the most anti-climactic renewal announcements ever: The Walking Dead is renewed for a fifth season. This is a show that has erased traditional distinctions between cable and broadcast. Its expanding base of passionate fans has grown every season, most recently – and most notably – with the season four premiere earlier this month, which broke viewership records for the series and became the biggest non-sports telecast in cable history. On behalf of the incredible team on both sides of the camera, thank you to the fans and here’s to more Dead.”

According to the press release Scott Gimple will return as the series’ show runner for season five along with executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse. AMC also recently announced that it is developing a companion series to “The Walking Dead,” based on a new story and new characters from Robert Kirkman.
