Syfy to Adapt Robert Charles Wilson’s Spin

Spin(1stEd)

Syfy has announced plans to adapt the Robert Charles Wilson’s Hugo Award novel, “Spin,” into a six-hour miniseries. Jim Uhls has signed on to adapt the novel for the miniseries. The novel was originally published in 2005. “Spin” is the first novel in a trilogy written by Wilson. The best-selling trilogy also includes “Axis” and “Vortex.”

The novel is officially described as follows:

Spin is Robert Charles Wilson’s Hugo Award-winning masterpiece—a stunning combination of a galactic “what if” and a small-scale, very human story. One night in October when he was ten years old, Tyler Dupree stood in his back yard and watched the stars go out. They all flared into brilliance at once, then disappeared, replaced by a flat, empty black barrier. He and his best friends, Jason and Diane Lawton, had seen what became known as the Big Blackout. It would shape their lives. The effect is worldwide. The sun is now a featureless disk—a heat source, rather than an astronomical object. The moon is gone, but tides remain. Not only have the world’s artificial satellites fallen out of orbit, their recovered remains are pitted and aged, as though they’d been in space far longer than their known lifespans. As Tyler, Jason, and Diane grow up, a space probe reveals a bizarre truth: The barrier is artificial, generated by huge alien artifacts. Time is passing faster outside the barrier than inside—more than a hundred million years per year on Earth. At this rate, the death throes of the sun are only about forty years in our future. Jason, now a promising young scientist, devotes his life to working against this slow-moving apocalypse. Diane throws herself into hedonism, marrying a sinister cult leader who’s forged a new religion out of the fears of the masses. Earth sends terraforming machines to Mars to let the onrush of time do its work, turning the planet green. Next they send humans…and immediately get back an emissary with thousands of years of stories to tell about the settling of Mars. Then Earth’s probes reveal that an identical barrier has appeared around Mars. Jason, desperate, seeds near space with self-replicating machines that will scatter copies of themselves outward from the sun—and report back on what they find. Life on Earth is about to get much, much stranger.

The miniseries will be produced by Universal Cable Productions alongside Rob Morrow’s Bits and Pieces Picture Company and Olympus Picture’s Leslie Urdang.

There is no word on when the miniseries is planned to premiere on Syfy. They have not announced who the studio is eyeing to star in the project or who will be helming the production in the director’s chair.

John Krasinski to Headline Michael Bay’s True Benghazi Tale 13 Hours

13 Hours has found its leading man in “The Office” star John Krasinski. The film is a true Benghazi tale being directed by Michael Bay. It is based on the book of the same name written by Mitchell Zuckoff’

The book it is based on is officially described as follows:

“13 Hours” presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. Those men went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism, to avert tragedy on a much larger scale. This is their personal account, never before told, of what happened during the thirteen hours of that now-infamous attack.

The novel was adapted into a screenplay by Chuck Hogan and it is set up with Paramount Pictures. Erwin Stoff is producing.

Opposite of most Michael Bay films, 13 Hours is rumored to be small scale film with a budget closer to that of his recent film, Pain & Gain. The budget rumors are currently unconfirmed.

There is no word on when the film is expected to release in theaters.

For some reason that I am sure HBO thought was warranted, the network has announced that the popular series will be heading to IMAX theaters later this month. Sort of.  Theaters will show the final two episodes of season four and an exclusive trailer for season five.

This is the first time in history that a television show will be shown like this in IMAX. If you choose to experience it, you can relive the Battle of Castle Black as well as the Emmy-nominated season four finale, “The Children.”

Greg Foster, senior executive vice president of IMAX Corp says,

“The scope and production quality of the show is quite remarkable, which will be highlighted even further in select IMAX locations—allowing fans, as never before, to become a part of author George R. R. Martin’s world that [showrunners] David Benioff and D. B. Weiss created for HBO. It has the action, storyline and epic nature that our fans seek in IMAX and we’re thrilled to team with HBO and our longtime partners at Warner Brothers to offer audiences a chance to experience it in the ultimate theater setting joined by other fans of the series.”

The IMAX showings will run in 150 theaters for one week beginning Jan. 23. We currently have no premiere date for season five of “Game of Thrones” but typically it has premiered either the last week of March or the first week of April.

The official cast for Robert Kirkman’s upcoming drama pilot, “Outcast” has been revealed. The series is based on The Walking Dead creator’s new comic of the same name and is set to premiere on Cinemax.

“Outcast” will star Patrick Fugit in the lead role of Kyle Barnes, a young man who has been plagued by possession since he was a child. Now an adult, he embarks on a spiritual journey to find answers, but what he uncovers could mean the end of life on Earth as we know it.

Kip Pardue as Mark Holter, the husband of Kyle’s adopted sister, Megan. Mark is a small-town cop whose temper sometimes gets him in trouble. Despite being mildly religious, Mark is a skeptic, who would never believe in something like demonic possession.

Kirkman has signed on to write the pilot script and executive produce with Chris Black, Circle of Confusion’s David Alpert, and FIC’s Sharon Tal Yguado and Sue Naegle. Adam Wingard (The Guest) will direct the pilot.
