The Taming of the Shrew Adaptation Secures Anne Hathaway

taming-of-the-shrew

Since staring in Les Miserables, Anne Hathaway seems to be jumping on the classic literature remake bandwagon. Rumor has it that the Hathaway is set to star in the upcoming big screen adaptation of the William Shakespeare play, “The Taming of the Shrew.”

Rather than a straight forward period film, the project will be a modern-day retelling of the play set in mid-20th century Italy. Considering this will be set in a more current time frame, the question remains of whether or not this retelling will retain the misogynistic elements of mens control over women and the desire to have a compliant and obedient wife remain. It is the 20th century after all and women have finally been given permission to have free will, right? That’s a thing right?

In case you didn’t read this on your own or in 11th grade english class, “The Taming of the Shrew” follows the tale of two sisters. One unsurprisingly more lovely than the other. The story depicts the utter gentlemen, Petruchio, as he attempts to court and marry the headstrong and titular “shrew” that is Katherina. Considering the fact that she didn’t choose Petruchio as a suitor, she is understandably an unwilling participant in the relationship. However, through “taming” and the various psychological torments that is the definition of true love, Katherina becomes the obedient bride every man desires. There is also a subplot featuring the hotter sister and a competition of men vying for her attention and thusly her hand in marriage.

Us women need some taming by the men in our lives in order to find someone who is willing to deal with our hysteria, amiright? Forget those old ideals of true love and happiness, that takes a whole lot of work after all. Just marry us off to some dick who will deny us food and water while physically and emotionally humiliating us in front of our friends and family at our wedding and then hence forth the rest of our lives. It’s every girls dream, right?

What a great tale! My hopes are that this modern-day retelling is more closely related to 10 Things I Hate About You rather than the actual play.

Abi Morgan has signed on to script the adaptation. The project will be produced by Debra Hayward and Working Title, another individual with knowledge of the film told TheWrap.

“The Taming of the Shrew” was famously adapted in 1967 staring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Another adaptation, also a modern-day retelling, was released in 1999 in the form of 10 Things I Hate About You starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles.

The casting of Hathaway is only a rumor at this point as Universal, Working Title and Hathaway’s representatives at CAA all declined to comment on the project.

Alice in Wonderland Sequel Planned By Disney

Disney recently announced that they have begun planning a sequel to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The film, which was released in 2010, starred Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. The 3D film went on to earn $1 billion worldwide and scored Oscars for art direction and costume design. Continue reading

Dark Knight Rises

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ on Blu-ray Dec. 4

Dark Knight Rises

I know its barely even Halloween season yet, but if you’re making your Christmas list for that special someone, remember that The Dark Knight Rises will be released to Blu-ray and DVD on December 4th. That’s plenty of time to get it wrapped up nicely and stuck under the tree.

You especially need to get your copy if you missed the epic comic book movie in theaters. Bane is the villain in the third and final team up of director, Christopher Nolan and Bat-actor, Christian Bale. They don’t call him the man who broke the bat without just cause.

Some details regarding the hot, December release have risen to the surface by way of a new press release. Let’s comb through some of the facts, shall we? Oh, and yes, that’s the official Blu-ray packaging artwork you see up above.

In addition to your typical single film DVDs, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group also plans to release the “Dark Knight Trilogy Limited Edition Giftset” this coming December. Now that sounds like a really great gift, provided the giftee isn’t a Bat-nut like myself, who already has copies of the previous two films. Also, keep in mind that in 2013 another gift set will be released called the “Dark Knight Trilogy Ultimate Collector’s Edition”. Hmm. That one sounds even better. Warner Bros. is also developing an app for mobile devices. So, be on the look out.

When it comes to the stand-alone film, The Dark Knight Rises will be avialable in Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital Download.

One Bat-flavored perk will be available free of charge. There’s The Dark Knight Rises app for IOS 5.0 or higher compatible devices such as iPhone and iPad, and Samsung Galaxy devices including S2, S3, Note, Nexus and Tab (operating system requirements vary by device). This free app builds on what’s already out there. So if you already have the “TDKR: Gotham City’s Most Wanted” app, The Dark Knight Rises app will serve as an update to that one in two phases.

The first update is coming late in October and will include several interactive activities. One item is a photo application that lets users pop a photo of themselves into a Tumbler, a.k.a. Nolan’s version of the Batmobile. In fact, if you are really serious about giving other the impression you can wield one of those military beasts, there will also be a video application that will allow users to insert a Tumbler into their personal videos. Because no day at the beach is complete without a Tumbler.

The second update will hit the same day as the Blu-Ray, which is December 4. It’s supposed to add a second screen functionality to the existing app. This way, you can sync compatible mobile devices with the Blu-ray disc via BD-Live enabled Blu-ray players. They must be connected to the same Local Area Network; however, but if they are, there’s more exclusive bonus content to drool over. You’ll get things like film location information, Gotham City maps, trivia, photo galleries and making-of featurettes. The second screen app is especially inventive. It gives you the freedom to control playback of the film on your TV via the Blu-ray player. You can get The Dark Knight Rises app from iTunes and Google Play.

As for the film itself, the Blu-ray Combo Pack will retail for $35.99, but the single disc DVD will sell for $28.98. You aren’t paying much more for that combo. Consider, too, what you are getting for the price. The Blu-ray Combo Pack has got the film in hi-definition on Blu-ray and in standard definition on DVD. This Blu-ray disc in particular should be stellar thanks to the IMAX technology utilized here. Filmmakers actually mixed it with the 35mm format. They call it a hybrid and it should provide for stunning clarity. Both the Blu-ray Combo Pack and the single disc DVD will also include UltraViolet, which allows the end user to download and instantly stream the film to just about any device, including compatible tablets and smartphones.

Keep an eye out for the “The Dark Knight Trilogy Limited Edition Giftset,” as I mentioned earlier. It comes with a nifty book that will be exclusive to the collection.

Once again, The Dark Knight Rises features a screenplay written by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan, with a story by Christopher Nolan and wonder kid David S. Goyer. The all-star cast includes Oscar winner Christian Bale; Anne Hathaway as Catwoman; Tom Hardy as Bane; Oscar winner Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as beat cop John Blake.

Anne Hathaway in Talks for Spielberg’s ‘Robopocalypse’

As if the novel, Robopocalypse, weren’t already fascinating enough on its own, things just got a little more interesting. That tends to happen when Anne Hathaway’s name gets dropped!

Robopocalypse is that novel with the stunning cover, the one depicting a close-up of shiny, white, feminine robot’s face with black eyelashes and devil red eyes. From author Daniel H. Wilson, it reveals a future for humanity under the reign of a childlike, yet extremely powerful A.I. called Archos. Think Skynet from the Terminator series. Archos is a the global network of machines that has turned against mankind. At the very brink of extinction, a few scattered survivors manage to team up and develop a strategy for taking back their world.

The book has plenty of acclaim. It has been likened to The Andromeda Strain and to works by sci-fi giant, Robert Heinlein. Stephen King sang it’s praises, too. It’s noteworthy that the author has a PhD in robotics.

None other than Steven Spielberg himself is adapting the action-packed book into film. Tom Rothman has signed on as producer and Dark Knight Rises actress, Anne Hathaway is in negotiations to act in Robopocalypse.

The picture will be co-produced between DreamWorks and Fox, with Disney in charge of domestic distribution. A release date of April 25, 2014 has already been chosen.

Fox and Spielberg also worked together on the futuristic film, Minority Report. DreamWorks scooped up the property way back in 2009, purchasing the rights before Wilson’s manuscript was ever published!

Steven Spielberg said in a statement, “When someone like Tom is a free agent, you snatch him up fast. He has proven himself to be a necessity of this industry. At Fox he had already been an enthusiastic partner on Robopocalypse, and it is to our advantage that he would come produce this film with me. Tom has been a wonderful friend and colleague over the years and DreamWorks is incredibly lucky to have him on board.”

Tom Rothman said, “If you are in politics, you dream of a call from the White House, in baseball, from the Yankees, in movies, fromSteven Spielberg. Robopocalypse is the kind of important epic entertainment, a big movie with big ideas, that Steven does better than any filmmaker on earth. I am honored beyond measure that he asked for my help on it and fired up to do whatever I can for him, Stacey, the outstanding DreamWorks team, and all of my friends at Fox. I enjoyed the idea of being unemployed for a week, but this will be way more fun.”

I think Anne Hathaway is an excellent choice for this property. She has more than proven she can hold her own as an action star thanks to her turn as Catwoman, a role I was surprised she pulled off so amazingly well. The adaptation of Les Mis is only going to further catapult the young actress into the public eye. We are already hearing reports that hunk Chris Hemsworth may also try for a role in Robopocalypse. Do you think those two would have adequate chemistry? I hear Ben Whishaw, who will be appearing in another sci-fi film, The Cloud Atlas, is also looking at a part.

The third and final film in Christopher Nolan’s franchise will hit theaters and IMAX on July 20th with an all-star cast.

  • Christian Bale returns as Bruce Wayne / Batman:
A billionaire socialite dedicated to protecting Gotham City from the criminal underworld. Nolan has stated that, due to the eight-year gap between the events of The Dark Knight and those of The Dark Knight Rises, “he’s an older Bruce Wayne; he’s not in a great state.”
  • Tom Hardy as Bane:
Hardy stated that he intended to portray the character as “more menacing” than Robert Swenson’s version of the character in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin. Producer Emma Thomas says that Bane “is an interesting match for Batman after the Joker, who was just purely about chaos and playing with people. Bane has a plan.”
  • Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle:
Selina Kyle is “an associate” of Bane.
  • Michael Caine also returns as Alfred Pennyworth:
Bruce’s trusted butler and confidant. Alfred has acted as a father figure to Bruce, and continues to aid Bruce on his missions as well as supplying him with useful advice.
  • Gary Oldman as James Gordon:
Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department. One of the city’s few honest police officers. Oldman described his character: “He’s a little reminiscent of the Gordon you see in Batman Begins. They’ve tidied up the city, but there’s still work to be done. He’s very world-weary.”
  • Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox:
Fox runs Wayne Enterprises on behalf of Bruce Wayne and serves as his armorer, providing him with high-tech equipment.
  • Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate:
A “Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.”
  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake:
Blake is a “Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.”

Josh Pence and Liam Neeson both appear as Ra’s al Ghul, leader of the League of Shadows; Pence plays a younger version of the character in scenes set thirty years before the events of Batman Begins, while Neeson reprises his Batman Begins role in a cameo appearance. Other cast members include Nestor Carbonell reprising his role as Mayor Anthony Garcia; Alon Abutbul as Dr. Leonid Pavel, described as “a mad scientist”; Juno Temple as a “street-smart Gotham girl”; Matthew Modine as deputy commissioner Peter Foley; Brett Cullen as a judge; Chris Ellis as a priest; Aiden Gillen as a CIA agent; and Rob Brown, Christopher Judge, Tom Conti, and Joey King in unspecified roles.

The official plot of the film follows the aftermath of the death of District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman assumes responsibility for Dent’s crimes to protect Dent’s reputation and is subsequently hunted by the Gotham City Police Department. Eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, Batman returns to Gotham, where he encounters the mysterious Selina Kyle and the villainous Bane, and must confront the latter’s plans to destroy the city.

Tie-In Novel To Be Released For The Dark Knight Rises

Titan Books announced Monday that the official tie-in novel for The Dark Knight Rises will be released July 20, the same day as the film premiere. The Dark Knight Rises, to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, will be the final installment in director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

The film will be adapted to novel form by award-winning author Greg Cox, and published by Titan Books, according to a press release.

Cox has novelized DC Comics Universe stories before, including Infinite Crisis (2006), 52 (2007), Countdown (2009) and Final Crisis (2010).

Nick Landau, a publisher for Titan Books, said he is excited to be involved with the Batman project.

“Batman is one of the most iconic characters of popular culture,” he said. “We’re tremendously excited to work with Warner Bros. on the novelization of ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ especially since it is the culmination of everything Christopher Nolan has done with his amazing trilogy. This is a part of motion picture history.”

Christian Bale, Liam Neeson and Gary Oldman will reprise their roles in the film. This will be the last film in the series, however, as Christian Bale has decided to leave the franchise.

Additions to the cast include Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) as John Blake and Tom Hardy (Inception) as the film’s primary villain, Bane.

The official plot of the film and tie-in novel will follow the events of the previous film. After the death of Harvey Dent, Batman assumes responsibility for the crimes committed by Dent. He is subsequently hunted down by the police of Gotham City. Then eight years later, Batman returns to Gotham City where he meets the mysterious and alluring Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, as he tries to stop villainous Bane from destroying the city.

The Dark Knight Rises will be released in theaters and book form on July 20th, 2012.
