Josh Brolin to Play Thanos in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy finally has its Thanos. According to a report from Variety, Josh Brolin has been cast to play the villain in the upcoming feature.

Thanos first appeared in the post-credits scene in “The Avengers,” but is a major villain in the Marvel universe. The character is also expected to appear in one, if not both, of the upcoming “Avengers” sequels.

“We’re definitely tied to ‘Avengers 3,’” director James Gunn recently said.

Guardians of the Galaxy  hits theaters Aug. 1. The cast includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Bradley Cooper.

The film is officially described as follows:

In the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. In order to evade Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a group of misfits including Gamora, Rocket, Drax the Destroyer, and Groot. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

Casting Update For Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

This week has been flush with casting news regarding the upcoming Sin City sequel, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. The film  was developed by Frank Miller based upon his graphic novel, with a screenplay by Miller. It is being produced by Robert Rodriguez and his Quick Draw Productions, Aldamisa, AR Films, Miramax and Solipsist. International sales are through Aldamisa International.

Similarly to its predecessor, the sequel weaves together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales in which the town’s most hard-boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more repulsive inhabitants. Several high-profile stars have been added to the project including Josh Brolin, Chris Meloni, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Brolin is set to play the character of Dwight, which is the same character that was previously played by Clive Owen in the 2005 original. But don’t worry, the changing in actors will be explained in the new film. In the adaptation, Dwight is hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord, and then watches his life go straight to hell. Chronologically, this story takes place prior to “The Big Fat Kill” and explains how Dwight came to have a dramatically different face.

“Dwight is a constant character throughout the Sin City world and ‘A Dame To Kill For’ is a defining episode in his life. We’re looking forward to Josh’s take on Dwight,” said Rodriguez and Miller.

Meloni of “Law & Order: SVU” fame as well as a recent stint on “True Blood,” has also joined the cast with very few details revealed. The announcement was made earlier this week and it was noted that he is one of the leads in the film and will be portraying a police office.

One of the most anticipated casting additions was that of Gordon-Levitt signing on to play one of the lead characters. His role is that of “Johnny,” a cocky gambler who disguises a darker mission to destroy his most foul enemy at his best game.

“Johnny is a new character in the Sin City world and we are excited for what Joseph will bring to the role,” said Rodriguez and Miller.

Gordon-Levitt also commented on the role and project saying,

“I love how the first movie uses VFX, not to make fake things look real, but to create a heightened world unburdened by the look and feel of reality. Plus, nobody makes a badass like Mr. Rodriguez.”

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For will also see the return on several actors and characters including Academy Award nominee Mickey Rourke as “Marv,” Jessica Alba as “Nancy,” Rosario Dawson as “Gail” and Jaime King as “Goldie/Wendy.”

Production is currently underway at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

The film will be released by Dimension Films in the US and Canada on October 4, 2013.

FilmDistrict Acquires US Distribution Rights for Spike Lee’s Oldboy Remake

It was announced today that the almost dead project, Spike Lee’s OldBoy remake, has had it’s U.S. distribution rights acquired by FilmDistrict. The film, a U.S. remake of the South Korean film, is set to star Academy Award® nominee Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, and Sharlto Copley.

The Spike Lee project is being produced by Roy Lee and Doug Davison via Vertigo Entertainment and Nathan Kahane on behalf of Good Universe. Peter Schlessel, FilmDistrict’s CEO, Joe Drake of Good Universe, and John Middleton will executive produce. Mark Protosevich wrote the adapted screenplay and is co-producing. Audrey Chon and Matt Leonetti are overseeing the film for Good Universe. The film is also a 40 Acres & A Mule production.

FilmDistrict’s Peter Schlessel commented on the acquisition saying,

“Spike Lee is the right filmmaker to reimagine and put his touch onto arguably one of the most talked about thrillers in recent memory. The cast that he and producers Nathan, Joe, Roy and Doug have put together is sure to elevate the material and engage audiences. FilmDistrict is proud to be releasing one of the first films from Good Universe here in the U.S.”

Good Universe’s Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane said,

“Nothing thrills us more than to partner with our longtime friend Peter and the exceptional team at FilmDistrict.”

Oldboy is a psychologically provoking thriller that follows a business man who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. He has no idea why or who has him locked up. Then one day he is released and embarks on a mission to figure out what has happened to him. His quest for revenge leads him into an ill-fated relationship with a young social worker and ultimately to an illusive man who allegedly holds the key to his salvation.

The original highly-acclaimed South Korean film, released in 2003 and directed by Chan-wook Park, won the Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

My question is this. Will this remake stick to the themes of love, incest, right and wrong? Ignorance is bliss, sometimes, though it is up to the viewer to decide their opinion on the matter. Incest remains a huge taboo subject in American culture and the idea of presenting it so openly may  alienate viewers. Also, will they have a scene eating a live octopus? PLEASE, I HOPE NOT. I CAN’T HANDLE THAT AGAIN.

Men in Black 3 Takes Top Spot At Box Office

Many people may not be surprised that highly anticipated Men in Black 3 took the top box office spot in its opening weekend. Although some people may be surprised that it replaced Joss Whedon’s Marvel’s The Avengers which was steadily holding the number one spot until last weekend.

MIB3 opened to earnings of $54.6 million, making it Will Smith’s third highest-grossing Friday-Sunday debut to date behind I Am Legend ($77.2 million) and Hancock ($62.6 million). However, despite it’s very strong opening when these figures are adjusted for 10 years of ticket price inflation and 3D ticket prices, Box Office Mojo reported that MIB3’s initial attendance was significantly lower than that of MIB 2.

In “Men in Black 3,” Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) head back in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K’s life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him — secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.

MIB3 stars Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Jemaine Clement, Emma Thompson, Nicole Scherzinger, Alice Eve, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

The film has good reason for being number one though. It has been receiving positive reviews, with a 76 percent audience rating at Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s audience was 54 percent male and 56 percent over the age of 25, according to Sony.

Even though Marvel’s The Avengers was knocked out of the top spot, it is not about to lose steam. The film still made $46.9 million during the four-day weekend. Its three-day gross was $36.7 million, which is the second highest fourth weekend ever behind Avatar’s $50.3 million.

Other films that opened this weekend included Oren Peli’s horror flick Chernobyl Diaries as the 12 highest grossing movie, Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom also opened with the highest grossing indie debut of all time, according to Box Office Mojo.
