Could World War Z Be Shelved?

Since it began filming last year, there have already been several MAJOR complications in adapting the much loved novel “World War Z,” written by Max Brooks. There were already doubts floating around regarding the difficulty of adapting a novel that is written entirely as a oral account. Then when Brad Pitt entered the picture, the internet collectively yelled “mistake!”

And now months after the project was announced it seems to be shambles. It’s budget has skyrocketed to $170 million with no guarantees that the film will make that money back in the box office.

The film’s release has also been delayed by 6 months for extensive reshoots that signaled major issues regarding the film were on the horizon. It was originally supposed to open in theaters on December 21, 2012, however, the studio has set the film back by 6 months opening on June 21st, 2013.

It was also announced last week that the reshoots needed a new writer to fix the script and screenplay. Whatever caused the massive 5 week reshoot was enough to hire a new writer to fix.

The Hollywood Reporter also reported that the director, Marc Forster never found voice for the flick causing much of it be disjointed and without a plan.

Trouble emerged early: Three weeks before shooting was to begin in June 2011, sources say Forster had not made critical decisions about what the zombies would look like and how they would move. “They just couldn’t get it right,” one insider says. “There was a lot of spinning of plates, a lot of talking. [But] they did not have a plan.” […]

“The director was not empowered,” says one insider. “There was nobody that steered the ship […] When you get [a director] who can’t do it all […] you get a struggle as to whose is the singular voice.”

Then a major mistake almost halted much of the filming in Hungary.

Then in October, proceedings were disrupted when a Hungarian anti-terrorism unit raided an airport warehouse and confiscated 85 fully functional automatic assault rifles that were to be used on the shoot. (The guns were not supposed to be operational, and it is illegal to transport such weapons into the country.) With the movie already behind schedule and over budget, Pitt was said to be livid at the mistake – and perhaps wearying of a project that was showing no sign of ending.

Many agree that Paramount should have shelved the project long ago when they were squabbling over the budget. However, the director seems hopelessly optimistic stating that he feels the film should be a trilogy.

“[We] each view World War Z as a trilogy that would have the grounded, gun-metal realism of, say, Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne series tethered to the unsettling end-times vibe of AMC’s The Walking Dead“

Despite the film being in the works for over a year , audiences know suspiciously little about the project. We don’t know which first person anecdotes will be included and which will be taken out. We don’t even know the full cast and their respective roles yet.

Though, the question stands, how many more problems will they deal with before the project is shelved? Many movies have been scraped for much less. Will the production company reach a breaking point? Even though these major issues keep slowing down filming and production, I wonder if Brad Pitt will use his star power to have it released no matter whether it is good or bad.

For now, I have high hopes for it even if they keep getting dashed by every news report from the set. Personally, I think fans of the novel should remain cautious until we get a trailer.

Game of Thrones Named Top Pirated Series – HBO Plays the Game of Exclusivity

Winter is coming HBO… where are you going to stand?

There were nearly 4 million downloads per episode of the HBO hit series, “Game of Thrones” and with that it has become the most pirated TV show of the season giving those HBO bigwigs another reason to create an online HBO subscription (that they will surely ignore).

“Game of Thrones,” which just ended its second season with high viewership for every episode among those who pay for the service. It is not a surprise that its popularity reaches past those who pay to those who pirate.

Restricted availability is one of the top reasons fans pirate the show to staggering amounts. While it isn’t a surprise that the show is the top pirated, but what is surprising is that HBO advocates against piracy but doesn’t have online subscription. I am sure if they offered the service for a measly $15 per month, that 4 million would decrease by at least half if not more and effectively making money for HBO.

HBO plays the exclusivity game and much like the game of thrones, when they play the game of exclusivity they win and we lose.

However, with that comes angry fans who don’t want to buy the expensive costs of adding the channel to their already expensive cable package and instead become pirates or use their friends/families accounts on HBOGo.

For a company that makes money they are surely missing out on some almost guaranteed revenue.

Taking A Look Inside The Walking Dead Set: Woodbury

There are a few things we already know about the upcoming season 3 of AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” We have already seen David Morrissey as the Governor of Woodbury, but we haven’t seen much of the actual set of the new season. Thankfully, a new behind-the-scenes set video along with some photos has been released to give fans an inside look at the set of Woodbury, and also the return of an old friend.

Spoilers are ahead!

In the set photos, we definitely get a good feel of how much of the season will look, at least visually. We also see what looks like the return of a character.

Michael Rooker appears in one of the photos as Merle Dixon, brother to a fan favorite zombie survivor Daryl. We hadn’t seen Merle in a while, except when he was inhabiting Daryl’s dreams. In fact, the last time we saw the real person Merle, he was handcuffed to a pipe on a roof with a zombie horde about to have dinner. While we do not know what context this character is returning in, it is safe to say that he is probably pretty pissed at Rick.

The behind-the-scenes video was filmed in Senoia, Georgia which provides the general scenery and set for season 3. You can watch the video below:

Dean Koontz Offers Odd Thomas Update

Let me first say that I don’t read Dean Koontz novels, with the exception of the Odd Thomas series. I find his typical flawed protagonist/damaged loner characterization daunting and overused, but that is beside the point. While Odd Thomas falls into this category, I have still enjoyed the novel series, but I am (incredibly) hesitant to see a movie adaptation.

In case you haven’t had a chance to pick up at least the first book of the series, (or choose not to) the story follows the life of damaged loner Odd Thomas and his enigmatically beautiful girlfriend Stormy. There is only one catch, Odd can see ghosts and has a unique ability to understand them and help them. He uses his ability to help solve crimes and put the spirits to rest. He is also terrorized though by darker spirits he named bodices that appear only in times of death and disaster. He is also followed by a sort of companion spirit, and in this case it is Elvis Presley who can’t seem to move on to the other side just yet.

However, the movie is done though, and there is nothing we can do about it. The film stars Anton Yelchin as Odd which I find to be a very odd choice (enthusiastic pun intended), He is no where near what I pictured for the film, and he doesn’t look like the graphic novel character either. And with that, the rest of the casting seems off to me as well with those involved including: Willem Dafoe as Wyatt Porter, Patton Oswalt as Ozzie P. Boone, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Viola, Nico Tortorella as Simon Varner and Curtis Jackson as Shamus Cocobolo. So that right there already scares me about the project. I feel like none of the casting fits.

Koontz recently did an interview and offered up his opinion of the upcoming film and the future for his titular character.

According to Koontz he was already put off of the idea to adapt his work into film, that is until Stephen Sommers called him up to speak about the Odd Thomas series. Apparantly, he hit the mark because Koontz agreed to the adaptation.

I have pretty much given up on Hollywood and the whole idea of movies, because they never got what I did properly. And so I told my attorney, “When somebody calls and says, ‘Are the rights to that book available?’, Don’t say yes or no. Call me up and tell me who they are, and I’ll think about it.” And about a year after he did that, he called me up one day and said Stephen Sommers is interested in Odd Thomas. And I said, “Hmm, I’ll talk to him.” Because he has done cross genre work in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. And he might understand what has to be saved and what doesn’t have to be saved in an adaptation. And sure enough, he’s done a brilliant job. He wrote the best screenplay I’ve ever read — not just of my stuff, but of anything. I’ve seen the finished film. I never expected I would say happily, “I love the movie.” I usually call up everybody I’ve met all my life and apologize for my relation with the film, but in this case, he’s done a wonderful job.

Regarding the choice of Yeltin as the titular character, Koontz remarks that he was hesitant about the choice at first until he saw the firs two minutes of the film.

Steve said to me, the first day we met, before we’d started shooting the film, “There’s only one actor under 30 I think I want, and I think is beyond just very confident and in fact great: Anton Yelchin.” I didn’t know who Anton Yelchin was, and when I found out who he was, I said, “I’m not sure.” But I really had a great deal of trust in Steve. And when I saw this movie, all you need is the first two minutes, and a scene he has with a villain in a convertible. And when I saw that scene, I just relaxed and said, “Great. He has found the perfect Odd Thomas.”

While that offers some comfort for fans of the series like myself, I won’t be happy with the casting choice till I see the film for myself. I reserve the right to be pleasantly surprised at Yelchin’s performance as well as the rest of the cast. Actors can surprise me, occasionally, on their abilities to become characters that seem so far from their reach.

Addison Timlin plays Stormy in the film and according to Koontz she fits the role just as well as Yelchin.

She’s just amazing. I couldn’t be happier about the performances in this movie. They are really above the cut of this type of movie generally speaking.” He also adds that Sommers does some things stylistically that are innovative: “He uses transitions, or he does scene transitions, in a way that I’ve never seen before, that just move me. And they’re very effective at keeping the pace moving.”

So while we don’t quite know when the film will be released, Koontz has said he thinks a winter release will happen since the film is already done.

I’m just happy. You never know if anything’s going to be a success or not, but I can watch this again. And the rest of them I couldn’t watch again. Some [of my movies] I couldn’t watch the first time.” He says Sommers is just shopping the completed film around, for a possible release this winter: “They’re making the distribution deal as we speak.”

As for the future of the series, Koontz has expressed interest in the past of making the series a 6 or 7 book series, but he recently confirmed that it will be 7 novels and he knows exactly how it ends.

Each step of it raises the stakes and it all starts accelerating, book by book. I once said I would never write a series that this one came to me in such an amazing fashion that once I’d finished the first book I knew I was going to. And it’s only taken me several years to figure out how many volumes, but I think it’s going to be seven.”

The next book in the series, which is the fifth, will be entitled Odd Apocalypse and is to be released this July. The author has also confirmed that the sixth book will be called Deeply Odd and the seventh Saint Odd.

It may be a while before the film comes out and until then I remain a doubtful party.

Walking Dead Fans Can Pay To Be Chased By Zombies

If you are a fan of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” or the zombie genre at all, you have probably contemplated what you would do during the impending zombie apocalypse. Would you be a scrappy fighter who kicks ass or a resourceful loner who finds a fortified perch to eek out an existance, or in the worst case: a meal for the living dead?

Well know you can find out without having to wait around for it to happen for real. Thanks to the Walking Dead Escape: San Diego, fans can find out exactly how they would handle the situation. The event is inviting up to 15,000 people to sign up for the chance to live while the zombie apocalypse begins.

The event is open to anyone 16 years or older and will begin on July 14th-16th inside Petco Park. The enticing event acts as a tie-in to the upcoming Comic-Con International.

“Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman, who will be participating in the event said,

“We wanted fans to experience — as closely as possible — the end of the world. It’s going to be a fun, messy time.”

The course for the escape was designed by Ruckus Athletics and creatively guided by Kirkman himself. It has intricate and interactive details that are true to original best-selling comic series that inspired the AMC series and is celebrating the release of its 100th issue.

Kirkman also assured that participants will not be timed, and that it is more of a “go-at-your-own-pace” type of event.

“You can run, jog, walk,” he said. “I’m probably going to crawl.”

Fans can register as a survivor or as a Walker or even as a spectator though that doesn’t seem as much fun.

Once participants reach the finish line or the “decontamination zone”, survivors will be evaluated to see if they have been infected. There will also be 15 makeup artists on site to make the Walkers as grotesque and real as possible. If you choose to be spectator, you can snap photos from the sidelines.

The event costs $70 for tickets but it seems to be worth it. At the end, all those who participated will receive an exclusive varient copy of the 100th issue which will be incredibly rare.

For more information about the event will work you can visit the event’s FAQ list. You can also see a map of the arena below:

Fans have been eagerly awaiting any news regarding the film adaptation of Catching Fire. It was recently announced that the highly anticipated sequel to the The Hunger Games will be shooting a portion of the film in Hawaii.

The set for the 75th Annual Hunger Games will be shooting in Kauai, a small Hawaiian island. In the novel, the 75th Annual Hunger Games is known as the Third Quarter Quell takes place on an island arena thats works as a clock.

While the casting for the major roles of the sequel have not been settled, just yet, we can expect the announcement to be soon due to the fact the film must finish filming by December. The two incredibly anticipated roles of Johanna Mason and Finnick Odair have not been cast and fans have been rampantly debating who should play the roles.

“Catching Fire,” Finnick Odair and the Third Quarter Quell will strike theaters late November 2013.

Jacob Hopkins Talks Being A Vampire On True Blood Season 5

During a recent interview over at our sister site, BSCkids, young actor Jacob Hopkins answers some questions about the upcoming season 5 of HBO’s “True Blood.”

There is little we know about his character in the upcoming series but we do know that Jacob plays one of the oldest vampires on the Vampire authority yet he is the youngest looking. His character, Alexander Drew, was turned at the tender young age of 9. However, don’t let his angelic face fool you, the old vampire is very cunning and very manipulative. Alexander will be known for being impetuous towards those around him.

Jacob described his character of Alexander as being “a feisty and strong-minded vampire.  He’s the kind of vampire who likes to taunt others.  He may look young, but looks can be deceiving.  He’s very wise and he pretty much makes himself heard.”

Some actors may find it difficult to play an age older or younger than themselves, let alone decades older, yet Jacob took the task in stride with confidence. He described how the other actors on set helped him get into the mindset of the old vampire.

I prepared Alexander to think like he was more important than anyone on the council or anyone who was in the same room as him.  It didn’t matter if I was 9 or not, Alexander is old and wise.  Once I was on set, it helped to be around all the other adult actors too.  I was in a suit and tie, sitting with the council, I felt like I was Alexander and a part of it all.”

He went on to credit fellow “True Blood” newcomer Christopher Meloni as an actor who taught him the most.

I have learned a lot from Chris Meloni because he would rehearse in front of everyone and he didn’t mind, and if he made a mistake, he would just go right back into it and he is such a great role model.”

And it is nice to know that Jacob loved his experience on “True Blood” saying that it was his favorite project thus far to work on.

I loved working with such nice people, great actors and I loved wearing my fangs!”

“True Blood” season 5 begins on June 10th and you can see Jacob starting on June 17th.

Watch Game of Thrones In A Life Size Replica Of The Iron Throne

If you are the ultimate “Game of Thrones” fan (and have tons of money to shell out) then spend season three next year watching from your life size replica of the Iron Throne. The throne is on sale for a measly $30,000 with an extra $1,800 in shipping costs.

HBO’s online store is selling the “”hand-finished, hand-painted fiberglass and fire-proof resin” versions that are identical to the one featured on the show and in the novel series. According to the mythology of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novels, the Iron Throne was constructed by former king Aegon Targaryen, the first king of the Seven Kingdoms, who built the throne from the thousands of swords taken from his defeated enemies. The throne was built over 59 days of constant hammering to get the swords into position and much is made of how uncomfortable it is to sit in. So maybe you won’t sit in it too often.

The replicas are over 7 feet tall and weigh 350 pounds. The official specs are:

  • Height: 7’2
  • Depth: 5’11
  • Width: 5’5
  • Weight: 350 pounds

Since going on sale Tuesday morning there hasn’t been any information on whether anyone has bought the chair but surely only a Lannister could afford it anyway.

There and Back Again

Thorin and Company have reached Lake-town and it is time for the hobbit Bilbo Baggins to fulfill his contract with the dwarves. The party must complete the journey to Lonely Mountain and burglar Baggins must seek out the Secret Door that will give them access to the hoard of the dragon Smaug. If Bilbo and the others are able to gain the treasure, will they be able to keep it? And will they discover what has become of the wizard Gandalf?

Beorn received Gandalf, Bilbo and the 13 Dwarves and aided them in their quest to reclaim the Dwarves’ kingdom beneath Erebor, the Lonely Mountain. He was convinced of their trustworthiness after confirming their tale of encountering the Goblins of the Misty Mountains and Gandalf’s slaying of their leader, the Great Goblin.
