Hannibal Lecter

NBC Show “Hannibal” Gains David Slade as Director

Hannibal Lecter

In case you haven’t heard the new, NBC has greenlit a pilot based around the characters from the popular horror/thriller films that feature cannabalistic murder Hannibal Lector. Before you think this sounds like a rip off of “Dexter” but with a well-known character, let me say, yes it is.

The series, which has yet to begin filming, recently hired David Slade as director. Slade is known for his work as director of the film 30 Days of Night and work on Twilight Saga: Eclipse . Slade also directed the pilot episode the series drama “Awake” that is also on NBC.

Slade will director the upcoming pilot episode which will feature characters from Thomas Harris’ series of novels that began with Red Dragon.

The show will expand upon the events alluded to in the novel Red Dragon, written by Thomas Harris. Set in Lecter’s early days, the show will examine the time Lecter went head-to-head with FBI agent Will Graham, instead of instead of Harris’ original protagonist, FBI trainee Clarice Starling.

Hugh Dancy will be playing the role of FBI agent Will Graham, and is scheduled for premiere sometime in the fall season.

With this being a network show, as opposed to being on channels such as Showtime or HBO, viewers can expect to not see to much blood, or too much violence. This, in my opinion, will make the show a little less interesting given the type of killer that Hannibal is.

New Post-Apocalyptic Trilogy Heads to the Big Screen

Yet another post-apocalyptic novel trilogy has plans for the big screen. Black Forest Film Group told Variety that they have plans to adapted the trilogy “Quarantine.” (The series was originally called Quaranteen). The first novel in there series, “The Loners” (which will be the first to be adapted) is set to be released this July.

The official synopsis is as follows:

The Thorpe brothers are on their own. Ever since their mom died, and their dad took a big job, David’s been forced to play parent to his epileptic younger brother, Will. He knows he’s got to teach Will how to take care of himself sooner rather than later. But when a mysterious explosion rocks their high school one morning, David realizes he needs to teach Will real survival skills, if the two of them are going to make it out alive. With the explosion, a deadly virus is unleashed on the school. The virus only infects teenagers in their peak puberty years, causing them to lose their hair and making them lethal to adults and children. Within minutes, every faculty member is dead. The military quarantines the building, opening fire on any escape attempt and installing bi-monthly food drops. After a year of quarantine, with no adults around, all of the social cliques have developed into gangs – The Nerds, The Geeks, The Freaks, The Skaters, The Pretty Ones and Varsity – and without a gang, it’s almost impossible to survive.

Because of an old grudge, David is hated by Varsity, the scariest gang in school. Because no gang wants trouble from Varsity, nobody wants David or Will as a member. Now, more than ever, the brothers need to work together, but if the school doesn’t kill them, sibling rivalry will.

In this dark and captivating debut, Lex Thomas takes readers on a thrilling ride of a high school where fitting in is a matter of life-or-death.

The novel’s authors, Lex Hrabe and Thomas Voorhies (under the pen name Lex Thomas), will adapt their tale into a feature screenplay, which is already being eyed as a potential franchise.

There is no word yet on who they are eyeing for the roles, or a projected release date. But with the popularity of The Hunger Games, I am sure they will want to have it made a released quickly while people are still yearning for post-apocalyptic story lines and tween romance.

The Hunger Games Accuses Harry Potter Fans of Trademark Violation Over Charitable Campaign

With the release of The Hunger Games in theaters this past weekend, the film is still fresh on fans minds throughout the world, but it seems the Harry Potter Alliance’s Imagine Better Project is hoping to profit off the fan with their new slogan. However, Lionsgate is not to thrilled with the slogan and has issued a takedown notice to the project.

Lionsgate and The Hunger Games have accused Harry Potter fans of using their intellectual property, by way of the title of the novel and film and using it to promote their cause. The slogan, “Hunger is Not a Game” has been used for campaigning by Harry Potter Alliance’s Imagine Better Project for their charitable cause.

Lionsgate studio claims that the project which is being let by the fan group in partnership with Oxfam is attempting to “piggy back” off their incredibly successful motion picture. The studio also claims that the campaign is causing damage to their studio and their marketing efforts for The Hunger Games.

SVP Business Affairs & Litigation, Liat Cohen, states in a letter,

We are truly making an effort to work with you on this. We have the ability to take down your sites as a violation of our trademark and other intellectual property laws. We hope that will not be necessary as this is too serious a subject.”

Along with the slogan, Imagine Better also uses references to the movie and the novels by using phrases such as “The Water Games” and the use of “Districts.”

On the other side, an activist has launched a petition in response to Lionsgate, asking fans to support the project and callings for the studio to “to stand with us, not against us.”

New “Ninteen Eighty-Four” Adaptation In The Works

One of the fathers of dystopian novels is preparing for a new film adaptation. George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four has been green-lit for a new big screen reboot. Imagine Entertainment is planning to bring back the famous science fiction dystopian tale.

The novel was written in 1948 by Orwell and tells a tale of the world in the future, now known as Oceania where big brother has taken over every aspect of the world. Individuality and privacy are forbidden and citizens can not escape the overwhelming government of Big Brother. The story follows the events of Winston Smith as he realizes there is more to the world than he initially thinks, and quickly ensues in a passionate love affair with a woman named Julia. But Big Brother doesn’t take this rebellion lightly and he is forced into a world he never thought he would see.

Imagine Entertainment has also teamed up with artist Shepard Fairey, who is most known for his iconic “Hope” poster for President Barack Obama. Fairey may also serve as producer when bringing the novel back to film.

Many might remember that the novel was previously adapted for the big screen in its titular year of 1984. It starred John Hurt as the lead character, Winston Smith. Nineteen Eighty-Four has also had several made for television movies as well.

Fans may remember that Imagine Entertainment is also working on bringing Stephen King’s “Dark Tower” series to the silver screen.

There is no word yet on who will star in the adaptation, or when the projected release date is expected.

I think there is a good chance the film will look amazing, but I have a feeling Hollywood will change the book that I grew up loving when translating it to the big screen.

City of Bones Adaptation Reveals New Director

The news that fans have been waiting for has finally been revealed. Harald Zwart, of Karate Kid fame, is set to direct the big screen adaptation of City of Bones.

While the director had remained a mystery for several months, it has finally be released now that the film is moving forward. Screenwriter Marlene King recently met with Zwart and the producers of the feature, and author of the novel, Cassandra Clare, also met with them and later confirmed that adaptation was moving forward.

Here’s the official synopsis for Mortal Instruments:

CLARY FRAY (Lily Collins) is an ordinary Brooklyn teenager until the night she meets the mysteriously tattooed JACE, who turns out to be a half-angel warrior known as a Shadowhunter. When Clary finds out her mother JOCELYN has been abducted, she desperately hopes Jace will be able to help. After a whirling golden portal transports her across time and space in a heartbeat, Clary realizes she too has the powers of the Shadowhunters. But can she harness them in time to save her mother?

Clary, Jace and their fellow Shadowhunters endure one breathtaking battle after another against vampire, warlocks and demons—only to discover Jocelyn hid a terrible secret from the fiercest warrior of all: VALENTINE. Cast out from the world of Shadowhunters, Valentine abducted Jocelyn believing she had a powerful tool known as the Mortal Cup. Using her newfound gifts, Clary finds the Cup, only to be brutally betrayed and forced to relinquish it.

Still reeling from this setback and racing to save Jocelyn before it’s too late, Clary finds herself caught in a battle between forces she barely understands. Based on the best-selling series by Cassandra Clare, MORTAL INSTRUMENTS is a magnificent urban fantasy rich in detail and suspense, about a girl’s journey to the darkest corners of the underworld to save those she loves

The film tapped Lily Collins to star as Clary over a year ago, and it seems she is still locked in for the film. Starring opposite of her is  Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace Wayland.

City of Bones is the first novel in the series written by Clare, and if all goes well, there is a possibility the whole series will be adapted.

It has also been confirmed that filming for the project is set to begin on August 15th in Toronto.

Jurassic Park Returning To Theaters In 3D

If you haven’t been terrorized by Jurrasic Park in your life, you are missing out. Whether it was from the original books, the subsequent movies, or the video games (Operation Genesis anyone?) people all over the world have had the iconic experience of dinosaurs run amok on Isla Nublar. And now fans can relive that experience in 3D. According to Universal Pictures, Jurassic Park will be returning to the theaters with a full 3D  conversion on July 19, 2013.

In case you were wondering why they are releasing it more than a year from now, next summer will mark the 20th anniversary of director, Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the novel .

The original novel was published in 1990 by author Michael Crichton. It was adapted by Spielberg a short three years later in 1993. The film won 3 Oscars as well as 19 other awards and 15 nominations. A sequel of the novel was published in 1995, called The Lost World. Which only two years later was also adapted into a film by Spielberg in 1997. Although it must be noted that the third film in the series, directed by Joe Johnston did not relate to either book.

A fourth installment is currently in the works, and is due to be released in 2013.

Before the original novel was published, there were many bids already on it for the picture rights. Universal Studios acquired the rights before the novels publication in 1990.

The cast of the original film include:

  • Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant, a leading paleontologist and main protagonist.
  • Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Sattler, a paleobotanist graduate student and love interest of Dr. Grant
  • Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm, a mathematician and chaos theorist.
  • Richard Attenborough as John Hammond, billionaire CEO of InGen and the curator of Jurassic Park.
  • Bob Peck as Robert Muldoon, the park’s game warden.
  • Ariana Richards as Lex Murphy, Hammond’s granddaughter.
  • Joseph Mazzello as Tim Murphy, Hammond’s grandson.
  • Wayne Knight as Dennis Nedry, the disgruntled architect of Jurassic Park’s computer systems.
  • Martin Ferrero as Donald Gennaro, a lawyer who represents Hammond’s concerned investors.
  • Samuel L. Jackson as Ray Arnold, the park’s chief engineer.
  • B. D. Wong as Dr. Henry Wu, the park’s chief geneticist.
  • Cameron Thor as Lewis Dodgson, the head of InGen’s rival corporation BioSyn.
  • Greg Burson as the voice of Mr. DNA

The cautionary tale of a film, struck a cord with fans all over the world. The cost of biological tinkering and mass chaos theory were being thrust into the face of society. The film was a huge hit, and I am pretty sure it’s 3D version will be a huge summer blockbuster as well. I mean I can guess only a few people will not want to see this film.

But don’t get to excited, July 19, 2013, is a long way away and you might just make that wait even longer. Trust me.

Always remember, Life will find a way.
